A beautiful, accomplished watercolor landscape painting of a gully with running water, 10 1/2" by 14 1/2" (19" by 22 1/2" in early 20th century gold frame), signed at lower left by the noted California art pioneer WILLIAM LEES JUDSON (1842-1928). The work is in unusually fresh condition, the colors true and not faded. I note a small, obviously very old water drop at extreme upper right, where the tree line meets the right edge...

Introduction: One of the reasons Raphael's Madonna and Child paintings were so influential was that there were so many of them. They numbered in the dozens with many more copies done by later artists. Beyond that though, Raphael's Madonnas are admired for the quiet elegance each has in common while nevertheless allowing us to glimpse the intimate, even playful joy shared by both mother and child. Oil on canvas, 36" by 24" (45" by 33" as framed in wood), the subject a wicker chair draped with lacy cloth, a painting in the background and tea pot at right, signed with what appears as "Egeun" at lower right and dated 82. A Greek-speaker emailed me to inform me that the signed name is, in Greek, "Eleni" (Greek for "Helen"). This is a bright, contemporary painting in really excellent, fine wall-ready condition.

At first glance most would think this a print, but it is guaranteed to be an original drawing. The work on paper, measuring 22" by 18", and 27" by 23" in contemporary gold framing, is signed at lower left in a flowing signature "Petzoldt", followed by "Mchn. 28" (Munich, 1928). The handwriting of the signature and overall nineteenth century appearance of the drawing suggests this could be 1828, but the paper would definitely appear to be of the 20th century...

PAIR of oil on gray art board panels, each 14" by 4 3/4", 20" by 10 1/2" as framed, unsigned, the subject of each a picturesque old castle perched on a prominent mountain outcrop, in each view, a bridge with tiny figures crossing a torrent in the foreground. These could be a "before and after" scene of the same view, as one bridge is of stone and obviously more substantial than the other, which is of wood...

Vertical format colorful oil painting of a mounted cowboy making his way through a steep canyon in the Southwest or Rockies as the afternoon's last sun reddens a crag at right, a dramatic cloud beyond the "V" shaped notch topping an expansive and empty land beyond. The painting, measuring " by ", unframed, has some age but I doubt it would have been painted earlier than about the mid 1950's, judging from the stretcher and stapled canvas...

The scene is a small boat harbor with a traditional church and coastal village in the middle ground. Bonas was born in Barcelona but was in France in his twenties. Brooks Pettus (1918-2003) was a noted western American artist who passed away in Kennewick, Washington, leaving behind a large body of work in watercolor and oil that only recently appeared on the market. Pettus earned his Bachelor of Fine Arts at the University of New Mexico, and spent time in Albuquerque and Taos in the early 1940's. New Mexico's artistically inspiring landscape stimulated Pettus' aesthetic sense as it has for countless others...

Oil on board painting of a European village scene: an intimate cobblestoned lane winds between Old World houses, as a threatening sky looms above. The work is unframed and measures 26" by 20 1/2". It is signed at lower right and dated there "12" (the year 1912). The artist is ALBERT ABRAMOVITZ (1879-1963). Abramovitz was born in Riga, Latvia. He received art training at the Imperial Art School of Odessa, Russia, then went on to further study at the Academie de la Grande Chaumiere in Paris...

Oil on wood panel of a lady under a portico or trellis high above a coast like Amalfi in Italy, signed at lower right with initials "EC" and dated there "03". The work measures 12" by 7 1/2" (18" by 12 3/4" as framed). On the reverse of the panel is written in pencil old handwriting "E. W. Clawson 431 Pacific St.". It's possible that this could be the artist ("EC") but I can't be certain of that...

Oil on board painting of a sunny street scene in southern Italy, a central figure walking towards the viewer and others going about their business including washing clothes. The painting, signed at lower left "Pasini", measures 17 1/2" by 11 1/2" (21 1/2" by 15 1/2" in attractive old gold framing). The work likely dates to about 1900 or 1910. There is a light accumulated soiling and yellowed varnish that would make a cleaning well worth the investment. Pasini was known for his genre and land...
