Complete portfolio of etchings and drypoints by Sigmund Abeles (USA, born 1934). 1969. This is a collection of works produced mostly in 1966 and issued as a portfolio in an edition of 65 plus 10 artist's proofs in 1969 by Aquarius Press. All 13 works signed by the artist. Abeles is an important 20th and 21st century American artist.

Original diptych (deep etch on zinc) by Wendell H. Black (USA, 1919-1972), circa 1961. 12 1/2 by 23 1/2 each. Titled l.l. and numbered 7/25. Signed and dated "Wendell Black 61 by Elaine". From the first edition of this work, printed posthumously by Berkley Chappell, and signed by Black's widow Elaine. No lifetime edition exists. cf: The Lost Works of Wendell H. This is an elegant etching in grays and black on heavy white paper (or possibly could be considered an aquatint with etching I believe), the sheet measuring 29 1/2 " by 21 1/2", in a narrow modern simple frame, crisply pencil signed by the artist, with a Chinese symbol resembling a traditional artist's stamp at lower right (possibly for the word "Ping") and numbered 41/110 at lower left, and titled "Life" in English and presumably Chinese, at lower left center...

The artist titled both in margin and signed at lower right. Roudebush was born in Portland, Oregon and moved to Sacramento as a youth...

From having checked the 1981 catalog raisonne by Daniel Marchesseau, I have determined that the most official title of this work is "Fillette aux Yeux Vertes" ("Young Girl with Green Eyes", although a number of other titles are in common usage for this essually popular print)...

Levine, deceased in 2010 at the age of 95, will be remembered as an artist who bucked the modernism trends to pursue his own trail in social satire, caricature, and "Hebraism". He was born in Boston and was exposed to the grittier aspects of street life...

Pencil-signed, titled, and numbered 3/25 in the bottom margin. Xie Lifa (b. 1938) studied drawing and sculpture in Paris in the 1960s before relocating to the U.S. in 1968 to focus on printmaking. Etching, 4 3/4" by 6 5/8" inside the mat, 10" by 12 1/2" in simple black strip frame, titled in pencil at left margin "A Bermuda Lane" and signed in margin in pencil at lower right by artist RAY ALLEN. I do not see a listing for an artist of this name. The work likely dates to about the 1950's I would think, and is probably still in its original frame. The impression is strong, with a distinct plate mark. Disregard false yellow colors in some of the photos, which are an effect of the camera....
