Original intaglio by Wendell H. Black (American, 1919-1972), in excellent original unframed condition. This work is titled l.l. and marked A/P, also signed by the artist's widow and dated l.r. It was posthumously printed by Berkley Chappell, who produced the first edition of the lost prints of Wendell Black. Cf. "The Lost Prints of Wendell H. Black" by Henry Sayre. Etching on paper, the sheet 6 3/4" by 9", 12 1/4" by 14 1/2" framed, the subject a group of children floating playfully on a makeshift raft, pencil signed at lower right by noted English artist and illustrator, author and poet EILEEN SOPER (1905-1990). Fine etching of windmills in a landscape in a brownish-black ink, 9" by 11" (14 1/2" by 16 3/4`" framed), pencil signed at lower right by listed artist DIRK BAKSTEEN (1886-1971). The quality of the work is excellent, reminding the viewer of Rembrandt and other better known artists, though Baksteen is a somewhat obscure figure today. Born in Rotterdam and educated in art there at the academy, by 1912 he was in Mol, Belgium, becoming part of the "School of Mol" landscape artists...

Offered together as a matched pair (and see ANOTHER example of this artist's printmaking in my shop), these are etchings on paper, identically framed, each 11" by 8" inside the mat, 20" by 15" framed. Each print is signed at lower right in pencil by well known New Orleans artist EUGENE F. LOVING (1908-1971). Both prints are titled at lower left, one "Pirates Alley/Old New Orleans", the other "Maison Seignouret Court/Old New Orleans; and each bears the artist's notation "Ed/200"...

A print with some subtle color in the printing process, the subject typical houses along a canal, likely in The Netherlands, signed in pencil at lower right below the image "Van Gelden". On the reverse is a label giving the name of the artist, stating that this is a copper plate proof etching, published in Paris in limited edition.
