TWO antique original (not reproduction) lithograph prints with delicate, subtle hand coloring,by noted English artist and nineteenth century Middle Eastern traveler DAVID ROBERTS (1796-1864). Roberts is best known for his lithographed images of sites in the classical Middle East, of which these are typical examples. A group of three engravings probably by Johannas and Raphael Sadeler of Christian anchorites or hermits. The prints are after Maartin De Vos. A view of the "Kolk" in Rotterdam, Holland, titled "Rotterdam Kolk" at lower left, plate signed with conjoined initials (tiny) and pencil signed "Marius Janssen" at lower right margin, 12 1/4" by 18 1/2" as framed. The Kolk is a familiar part of the center of this historic city, which suffered severe damage in World War II. The paper has darkened with age, the margins are very tight, maybe trimmed a bit to fit the frame, and there is a small edge tear at upper right, not really visible at all ...

The print was done just before Callot started working on a huge print “Le Siege de Breda” and must have been done for better understanding of military formations.
