A man carrying a load of firing wood followed by his faithful dog, a solitary cow standing near its barn in the background, a man leaving the side door of his house carrying a bucket, and a man and woman leaving the home in a sleigh carriage driven by two horses down a country road – all orchestrate to create the nostalgic beauty which Currier and Ives created as the nation attempted to forget the pains of the Civil War.

A mid-Victorian chromolithographic print c1860-80 in a period gilt frame depicting two kissing children with a doll. This unsigned 7-1/4 x 5-1/2" print is mounted on a lined mat and encased on a period 11 x 9" gilt wood frame with original glass; it is in excellent original condition with no rips, tears, foxing, staining, fading, losses, damage or repairs other than a small water stain to the mat on the lower right corner and some minor scrapes to the gilding on the frame...

Most would see this work as an etching or engraving and never give it a second look----but, it is, amazingly, an original ink on paper drawing (I guarantee that), measuring 23" by 16 3/4" (34 3/4" by 28 3/4" in dark old oak frame). Floating troubadours in their gondola serenade an upscale looking couple at right, as two other figures seem to be appreciating the pretty spring or summer day. The drawing is signed at lower right with what appears as "C J Meancon", the first letters conjoined...

A very old watercolor painting of a barefoot young man with traditional clothing and conical hat, unframed, 7" by 3", unsigned, dating to the mid 19th century. It could be by a local artist of the China Trade School, or perhaps by one of the rare expatriate artists who visited the region, on the order of George Chinnery. Without a signature we cannot be sure of its authorship, but it is clearly antique...
