A pair of Arita dishes moulded in Ko Sometsuke Kraak style decorated with a pair of scholars playing Go, one of the four accomplishments of the Chinese gentleman scholar. In which one of the pair of figures is parodied in mitate style as a proud Rooster and Hen. A short eight character poem is incorporated in the design, but is probably unrelated to the figures, reflecting the contemporary popularity of haigu combinations of painting and poetry during the late Eighteenth century...

A White porcelain ware figurine of a Japanese puppy. The puppy has a small hole in its' neck, and an open mouth, and functions as a water dropper. Water droppers were used by a scholar to add water to the ink stone when mixing ink. The puppy is very attractive with Hirado style pierced eyes, large ears, modeled toe nails and a raised left foot. The puppy measures about 4" high x 5" long x 3 1/2" wide and dates to the late 19th, early 20th Centuries. The condition is excellent/perfect...

A Hirado blue and white porcelain bowl. Dragon decoration on the interior center. Flowerhead in mokkogata reserves decoration along the interior below the rim with pale iron oxide wash. Intricate dragon and phoenix decoration around the exterior. The unglazed bottom and foot with the smooth biscuit characteristic of the kiln. Taisho period. Good condition. Diameter, 5 1/2 inches. Height, 2 1:8 inches.

An Unusual Japanese Porcelain Kensui, late 18th Century.

A kensui is a pot in which the water is poured after rinsing a chawan during the tea ceremony. The enamelled design is unusual especially the bold use of iron-red. The base has a variation of the spiral fuku mark, used in the 1780’s. It is uncommon to find ceramics associated with the tea ceremony that can be safely dated to before the 19th century.

A Japanese porcelain steep-sided dish depicting a traditional zashiki room or perhaps a temple interior. The plants seen through the windows are banana and cycad, both common in warmer climates as experienced in Kyushu or Okinawa. Arita 1730 - 1750. This miniature Japanese blue and white Imari vase is an early 20th century product. It is 3 ¾” high and 2 ¼” at its widest part. A fan shaped design painted with a landscape and tree adorn the neck of the vase. Morning glory, chrysanthemum and unknown flowers are painted on the body. Though small, the painting is very well presented. Aside from two cracks, one on the bottom and one on the side of the fan due to firing, it is in excellent condition.

Japanese Hirado-ware porcelain dish with blue and white design of Mount Fuji and pilgrim hiker gazing from the mountain path. Meiji period (1868-1912). It measures 6" diameter.

A Fukagawa nine inch sauce boat and underplate fired on in the kiln. Iris decoration from Chuji Fukagawa's own 19th century design book. Blue underglaze and red, yellow and gold overglaze enamel decoration. Mt. Fuji mark in oxidized cobalt blue on the unglazed, flat foot of the undertray. Late Meiji or early Taisho. Good condition. She sits holding a scroll in her left hand and her face is well modeled with a serene, downcast expression. Japanese late Meiji to Taisho period Kutani okimono of a seated bijin reading a horizontal scroll finely executed in overglaze polychrome enamels with gilt highlights set against a finely crackled white porcelain ground. The beauty is dressed in an elaborate kimono and her hair is adorned with gilt hairpins. 8 3/4" high. Late Meiji to Taisho period (early 20th century). Description: Japanese seto ware tray and box, including 1 rectangular tray, 1 1/4"H x 8"L, and 1 lozenge-form covered box with bamboo-shaped handle, 3 3/4"H x 5 1/2"W. Each porcelain piece decorated in blue under glaze with landscape reserves. The box is signed at the underside. Early 20th century. From the Estate of David Steinman, Bloomsfield Hills, Michigan.

A wonderful Kutani saki bottle, done in the Yoshidaya style. Decorated in brown, green, yellow ochre, and blue enamels with shaped panels of landscape scenes. In excellent condition, no chips, no hairlines, no cracks, it measures 6.75” high x 3”. This is a revival piece done in the Meiji period circa 1890-1900.

A fine late 19th century Imari 10.125" square plate, signed and brightly painted in shades of blue, red green and gold.

A Kakiemon style porcelain six lobed dish. Cobalt blue underglaze and red, green, yellow, blue and black outline overglaze enamel decoration of 'three friends of winter' (pine, bamboo and prunus). Assymetry of decoration, as well as palette, typical of Kakiemon type porcelains. But the quality of decoration (though good inside the dish), potting and mark speaks to a more general 'Arita' attribution. Some kiln grit adheres inside the foot rim. 19th century...

Ca. early 1800s

These dishes have an underglaze blue design of treasure ships (wishes for good fortune). The reverse of each is painted with a stylized wave design encircling the foot and a double gourd mark with two characters is painted on the bases. Acquired in the 1960s from an American collection. There are minor nicks to the glaze on the rims, otherwise good condition – no cracks or repairs.

A good, Japanese iroe imari dish of square form with garden landscape decoration in red, green, yellow, aubergine, black and gold enamel and underglaze blue. The center panel decorated with pines, plantains and maples among rockery and below stylized clouds. The rockery employing "master of the rocks" technique of consecutive contour lines - the stylized clouds echoing the technique. Good condition. 7 to 7 1/8 inches square.
