This is Indigo dye cotton tsutsugaki furoshiki textile of the Edo era(1800-1867). It is a very beautiful crane and a lucky design of the tortoises.It is a characteristic of tsutsugaki of the Edo era that the ear of the tortoise is expressed like a dragon. There is a thin stain. There is not damage. It is in a very good state. It is made of hand-spun cotton and natural dyed. size:141cm x 142cm (55.5" x 55.9")

Wa-sarasa futonji made of cotton and dyed with pigments. Wa-sarasa is Japanese calico which is first made in Edo period immitating calico from abroad and stencil-resit dye or woodblock print. The product places were Nabeshima (Saga Pref. in Kyushu), Sakai (Osaka), Nagasaki (Kyushu) etc, however it is not clear where this futonji was made. In excellent condition. Han-gappa (short jacket) made of kuzdu-fu whose wefts are kudzu fiber and warps are cotton. Kudzu is one kind of leguminous plant. The collar is made of imported wool. Han-gappa made of kudzu-fu was worn in summer and other ones with lining was for winter. The design of the straps show it was made after Tenpo era (1830∼1844）in Edo period, according to the "Kinsei Fuzoku-shi" Buttons are made of the horn of the water buffalo...

Hanten remade from Echigo-jofu kimono which is handwoven with choma (ramie) and both weft and warp are hand-plied. Echigo-jofu has been woven in Echigo region in Niigata prefecture since ancient time. Especially, pictorial and cross double kasuri patterns were very popular and much produced in late Edo period (the first half of the 19th century). Those Echigo-jofu with cross double kasuri kimono are seen many in Ukiyo-e. This hanten has double kasuri pattern and stripes. 19th century...

This is Tsutsugaki firefighter coat of Edo era (1800-1860). This is cotton Hanten spun by hand of thick indigo dyeing. It is a design very impressive beautifully. Like F1 ~ F5, this has the part that some indigo blue changed. Both cuffs have damage such as F6. 108cm x 123cm (42.5 "x 48.4")

This is Katazome kimono of Edo period. This is the Silk pongee that a face was spun by hand. The lining is cotton cloth. As for this, a pattern of Katazome is a design of a Japanese pampas grass and the ivy. The Japanese pampas grass pattern of Edo period is very rare. As for this, the material of the kimono is silk. The part of the collar is cotton of twill fabrics. It is unusual for two material to be used for the same kimono in the same Katazome pattern...

Almost square fukusa or ceremonial cloths, with design of a family crest with central flower surrounded by wisteria. Flowers embroidered in gold thread onto a deep blue satin ground. Reverse is red crepe silk. In each of the corners a green tassel with Chinese knot. Japan, Meiji era, ca. 1900

Baby's ceremonial kimono made of asa whose warp and weft are hand-plied. It looks choma (ramie) than taima (hemp), however it is not proven till it is looked by a microscope. Child's or baby's kimono was recycled from adult's and so did this one. It has some stains. The folded seam in the body is unseamed. The second half of the 19th century. 96cm x 115cm
