A pimpled toad looks to the sky exhaling a clouded spirit, a truly superb version of this theme in deep caramel bronze dating from the Meiji period. It is an interesting theme, the ugly creature elevated to the status of saint. Judging by color and quality, we attribute this as the work of Kanaya Gorosaburo (1836-1890), a bronze artist of Kyoto fond of this color and known for his superb modeling and detail. A charming and intriguing bracelet by Japanese designer and jeweler Miye Matsukada (1922-1981). She worked from her store on Newbury St. in Boston from 1950 until her death. With obvious design influence from her country of origin, there are five circular charms each with an applied design of a flower. The reverse of each charm is signed Janiye Japan Sterling 950 and initials as well as a date inscription ranging in years from 1948-1962...

Impressive handcrafted sterling silver and turquoise cufflinks designed and signed (c.1950)by Taxco, Mexico artist Hector Aguilar (1905-1986). Each link measures 1 1/2" X 1". Comprised of heavy gauge silver with applied beading and centered with a bezel set diamond shaped turquoise stone. Aguilar designs can be seen in museum collections around the world. He was well represented in the recent exhibition WILLIAM SPRATLING AND THE MEXICAN SILVER RENAISSANCE.

Handcrafted sterling silver pin designed and signed (c.1950) by Taxco, Mexico artist Antonio Pineda. 1 1/2" diameter. The monkey design is most likely taken from primitive clay seals that were part of early Mayan or Pre Columbian culture. The shadow box cutout of the monkey gives the piece an attractive dimension. No dents or dings, pin back and safety lock works perfectly. Hallmarks include the Antonio crown, Hecho En Mexico, 970 for silver content.

An antique cast bronze waniguchi bell or gong, the type used to hang in front of places of prayer and under temple eaves dated 1710. Often these can be found hanging over saisen-bako where the bell is rung by clanging a dangling rope with wooden corbel against the bell to awaken the gods; coins are tossed and a prayer given. Anyone who has been to a Japanese Temple or Shrine may have noticed one. A much thinner cast than the later bell we are offering
