Featured on page 172 of the book MEXICAN SILVER by Morrill and Berk, this is the Female Dancers Bracelet by Los Castillo, c.1940-45. Very rare and exhibiting magnificent detail, it measures 7 1/2" end to end and is 1 3/4" wide. I am unsure if the clasp is original or perhaps a replacement although it has the same patina as the bracelet. Weighing 78 grams, the bracelet is in excellent condition. Signed and numbered as shown. A Mexican silver collectors dream.

Ethereal, barely touching the ground, light as a feather and lost in the music to which she is dancing, this vintage Marcel Boucher ballerina was crafted in the mid-1940s in Mexico for the renowned designer’s Parisina line. A stunner of a brooch, this Antonio Pineda sterling silver and amethyst floral cluster hails the maestro's finding himself as a modernist. Antonio's early pieces betray the strong influence Valentin Vidauretta exerted on his work, so much so that one acquainted with Pineda's classic design period would find it difficult to recognize them as Antonio creations. Yet here, the artist has already found his "hand"...

I was stunned when I first saw this early Mexico City brooch bearing the signature of Barrera - just couldn't get over the masterful repoussage and the fantastic oxidation that has rendered the design even more pronounced in its surface layering.Definitely reminiscent of Matilde Poulat's early work and a fantastic example of Mexico City silversmithing. The brooch is 2 5/8" tall by 2 5/8" wide (at its widest) and weighs 24.4 grams...

What is there to be said about this Villasana clamper that a careful look at the photos won't reveal in the most detailed, decidedly direct and breath-taking way? Sometimes I just feel that a picture is indeed worth a thousand words... Big, beautifully crafted and early as is indicated by the low design number this Deco Los Castillo silver brooch is wrought en repoussage in what seems to have been a favored motif among Mexican silversmiths and designers at the time. Fern leaves inspired rings, clamper bracelets, brooches and necklaces and of course, earrings. The design comes in variations enough to ensure that everybody will find a piece that appeals to them. The specific version, however, I have never encountered before...

A design that doesn’t come up very often, these figural Mexican Deco silver earrings by Los Castillo remind me of Old World “wind” representations. I love the sense of powerful forward motion they convey with the curling repousse silverwork and the feather-like trail that the “winds” leave behind them as they sweep through the skies. I wonder what the rest of the parure looks like...

Good early Mexican Deco silver repousse jewelry is becoming harder to find - I don't know if it's because there weren't that many to begin with (quite often repoussage from that period seems a little clumsy, the technique needing additional experimenting with) or that at some point their popularity grew so much that they were "scooped up" from the market. Whatever the case, I am thrilled to be presenting this fantastic cuff bracelet with two saturated purple amethyst cabs here...

Until well into the 20th c. conducting one's own archaelogical dig was not prohibited in Mexico - both Spratling and Davis are known to have engaged in personal digs and their collections were frequently enriched by the fruits of those excavations. Quite often ancient, pre-Colombian beads as well as small stone artifacts that surfaced here and there were incorporated in pieces of jewelry silversmiths made in the first decades of Mexico's Silver Renaissance. I believe the stone beads in the neckl...

Abraham Paz was known for bringing to life the designs of Fred Davis. Many of Davis's designs are signed by Abraham Paz. The stone is large and I believe it is obsidian without a sheen. Symbols of hope for fresh, new beginnings swallows are an integral part of the advent of Spring in my home country and I grew up waiting for a glimpse of their bifurcated tails and soft, white bellies as a sign that the end of the school year and the fun-filled days on the beach were not far away.
