Thai Sawankhalok 13th/15th Century Stoneware Bottle (Ex. Grahame Clarke Collection)

This finely-shaped stoneware bottle, with its pear-shaped body and wide flaring mouth, was made during the 13th - 15th Century at one of the Sawankhalok kilns. It is quite "heavily-potted" and coated in a very unusual glaze of a dark greenish-blue colour with a most attractive crackled effect. There are incised bands around the neck. The glaze has run and sagged toward the unglazed lower body...

Ge type celadon glaze covering foot rim. Broad firing ring on base burnt red. Diameter = 11 cm Period : 14 th-15 th Century Longquan Kilns, Zhejiang Condition : crackline to the rim, no chips or hairlines and free from restoration.

Chinese Qing dynasty silk painted and embroidered panel finely rendered with a scene of an official and attendant on horseback passing traditional buildings set among clouds, rockery, and pine. Ink and color wash in "qing lu" (blue-green) colors provide accents and detail. The scene describes a Tang story of travelers heading to the 60th birthday celebration of a high official...

A very naturalistic portrait of a high ranking official. Painted on silk. Apparently this scroll ended up in Japan at some stage, possibly after the Japanese occupation of Korea. The box was added in Japan. Dimensions: H. 92 cm, W. 50 cm. provenance: Dutch private collection.

Description:

A brown-glazed Yuhuchun vase was in elegant form.
Well mold and being carved on the surface with affluent floral motifs, the vase was preserved in a perfect condition when enduring old crackles were spread immensely under the glaze.
Slight incursions were caused to the glaze and revealed by whitish tint.

Date: Yuan Dynasty,13th/14th century.

Provenance: Yaozhou kiln.

Height: 23.3cm.

A Turkish tobacco pipe with a long wooden shaft. Both ends of the stem swathed with paper and tombak wire, the middle section with red cloth between two pompons. The bone mouth piece kept by a wooden bead. The pipe bowl made of clay, covered by metal wire, decorated with different colored glass beads. The lid entirely worked in metal wire and glass beads attached by a chain to the bowl. Condition: Traces of usage, some beads missing, cloth with holes...

A fabulous 17th century Koro (Momoyama to early Edo period) covered in black lacquer inlayed with minute mother of pearl shippo designs around circular windows featuring floral motifs. The lid is solid silver, pierced with overlapping floral designs. The windows feature grape, plum, bamboo and other seasonal imagery important in Asian cultures. It is 11 cm diameter and in overall excellent condition considering the age.

A huge exhibition screen by Nakamura Masahiko (1897-1964) featuring a gagaku dancer striking a definitive pose before flaming phoenix on a background of mirror image five storied pagodas. Pigment on silk in a red lacquered wooden frame typical of the era. It is similar in content to his 1927 submission to the Nitten National Exhibition, and can be associated with that time...

A elegant lacquerware for monastery use. Made in Kyaukka, in the lower Chindwin District in Burma, made from woven matting and coiled bamboo and lacquered in black and red. This piece has six sections. These original Kyaukka pieces are difficult to come by. Size: H. 38cm. W. 38cm. Condition: No repairs. Very good condition.

Covered box painted in underglaze iron black, both lid and body decorated with 8 corresponding panels, alternately containing cross-hatching , the lower body and base unglaze with red and grey biscuit. Diameter = 12.5 cm, height= 11 cm. Period : Sawankhalok, 14 th- 15 th century. Condition : excellent, no chips, cracks, hairlines and free from restorations.

Large Chinese Song / Yuan Dynasty Glazed Buddhist Jar

This large and impressive pottery jar was made around the 13th / 14th century, during the Song Dynasty (AD 960 - 1279) or the Yuan Dynasty (AD 1279 - 1368). Until recent years, this type of jar was almost unknown in the west with some people initially attributing them to the Liao Dynasty (same general period but in the north of China)...

Gourd shape small vase with two loops, unglazed base. PERIOD : Sawankhalok(15th Century) MEASUREMENTS: 8 cm tall. CONDITION: good, a fritting to the rim, glaze degradation, no cracks, hairlines or restorations.

18 cm long set of Kanzashi with five Bira dangling from a branch to which is caught a court cap, possibly dragged from the wearers head during a horse race, or perhaps flung off in a passionate moment. For someone interested we have a museum quality collection of combs and hair pins which I would prefer to sell together in accordance with the previous owners wishes. Birakan (bira Bira Kanzashi) were hair pins used by all classes of society and were one of a woman’s most prized possessions...

Gilded bronze Buddha with great age wear and patina. H. 32 cm. Condition: on the right corner there is a loop where a small bronze disciple was placed. The loop on the left side is missing; this must have happened a long time ago as the remains are hardly visible. There is an old collection label on the back.

This Dong festival hat is wonderfully embroidered with wrapped thread technique. It is further embellished with gold and silver bits edging the fabric design. At the back is the traditional silver ornament of butterfly and hanging bells to keep evil spirit away

Something I have never seen before, a set of pillows for one couple from Shimabara, one of the oldest pleasure districts of Kyoto, enclosed in the original Kiri-wood storage box. The man’s pillow is a simple roundel of soft leather. The woman’s, made for a geisha and her elaborate coiffure, is a small tapering black lacquered box with a drawer for a hair pin, to the top of which is secured a brocade pillow with a silk chord...
