Thai Sawankhalok 13th/15th Century Stoneware Bottle (Ex. Grahame Clarke Collection)

This finely-shaped stoneware bottle, with its pear-shaped body and wide flaring mouth, was made during the 13th - 15th Century at one of the Sawankhalok kilns. It is quite "heavily-potted" and coated in a very unusual glaze of a dark greenish-blue colour with a most attractive crackled effect. There are incised bands around the neck. The glaze has run and sagged toward the unglazed lower body...

Description:

A brown-glazed Yuhuchun vase was in elegant form.
Well mold and being carved on the surface with affluent floral motifs, the vase was preserved in a perfect condition when enduring old crackles were spread immensely under the glaze.
Slight incursions were caused to the glaze and revealed by whitish tint.

Date: Yuan Dynasty,13th/14th century.

Provenance: Yaozhou kiln.

Height: 23.3cm.

A Turkish tobacco pipe with a long wooden shaft. Both ends of the stem swathed with paper and tombak wire, the middle section with red cloth between two pompons. The bone mouth piece kept by a wooden bead. The pipe bowl made of clay, covered by metal wire, decorated with different colored glass beads. A fabulous 17th century Koro (Momoyama to early Edo period) covered in black lacquer inlayed with minute mother of pearl shippo designs around circular windows featuring floral motifs. The lid is solid silver, pierced with overlapping floral designs. The windows feature grape, plum, bamboo and other seasonal imagery important in Asian cultures. It is 11 cm diameter and in overall excellent condition considering the age.
