A ghoulish character from the Otsu-e pantheon, the Oni no Nenbutsu, a devil in priests robes, stands grinning, hammer in one hand to bang his bell and a ledger in the other in which are noted all the peoples sins. This figure is carved of wood and covered in lacquer and mineral paints. Dating from the 19th century (Later Edo period) it is 13 inches (33 cm) tall. There are some losses to the pigments accentuating the antique feel.
Signed on the base by the renowned workshop of Uriarte in Puebla, Mexico, this very big tibor, or urn, measures 23" high, roughly 19 1/2' wide at the shoulder and weighs 32 pounds. It is decorated in the classic Talavera colors of blue, green, yellow, orange and black over a creamy slip. Over a background of crosshatching blue designs, there are four panels with floral and foliate designs in vivid color, and the base and shoulder area have a black scale pattern, with a scroll design on the neck...
