Description: A rare and lovely Yaozhou russet-glazed incense burner was in simple form. Wide-mouthed and with high-set shoulders when the neck is narrowed and the lip is rolled, the jarlet was applied with persimmon glaze inside and out of the surface. The bottom was flat and was concaved to a round circle. The unglazed base had turned to a buff skin during firing, and in a firm quality which were all the characteristics for a Yaozhou ware. A rare example of b/w large dish, decorated at the exterior with four fishes swimming among lotus pond and water weeds, on the cavetto with chrysanthemum scroll and border to the foliated lip rim with flower heads pattern. Nita A ring of skulls playfully sojourn on the front of this rather unusual deep Edo Karatsu Chawan. On back another pair tumble helplessly over the thick speckled glaze. The base is bare earth, dark and shiny with age and handling. The skulls are not just resist painted on, but are actually incised, the eyes and nostrils set deep into the southern clay. The bowl is 3-1/2 inches (8.5 cm) tall, roughly 4 inches (10.5 cm) diameter and is in excellent condition, enclosed in a wooden box.
