An incredible mixture of colors glisten like the walls of a Limestone cave in the hills of Akiyoshidai, the karst regtion south of Hagi where the important artist Kaneta Masanao created this bowl, enclosed in the original signed wooden box. The style is Kurinuki, not formed on a wheel but cut and worked from a block of clay, an approach the artist is famous for. Golden Camellia blossom all bout theoutside of this lovely wan-gata Chawan by the famous female artist Ono Hakuko enclosed in the original signed wooden box titled Kinrande Chawan. The pattern is created by applying gold foil to the surface before firing. Here she has cut the gold foil into patterns of camellia blossoms, and applied them over red glaze to great effect. Red highlights the gray and white of this Tea bowl by Kato Yasukage enclosed in the original signed wooden box titled Nezumi Shino Chawan. Yasukage has cupped and misshapen the bowl into five subtly flattened sides, with an undulating rim forming five peaks, the pin-holed glaze burnt and licked crimson by the flames. The fact he has given a Daimei (generational number) on the box indicates this is from after he succeeded the family name.
