Wonderful Oribe set of iron decorated plates by veteran potter, Yamaguchi Jusetsu. Vivid green Oribe glaze and whispy iron decoration make this set very usable across a wide variety of uses including tea ceremony. Yamaguchi's works are widely exhibited and published in Japan and abroad.

These plates are all in great condition and measure approximately 5.75" x .5" each and come with their original signed box.

Elegant Hagi chawan with white to faint lavender ash glaze over slip and daido clay body. Classic turned foot, kodai with cut notch and impressed seal.

Though marked, I have been unable to read the seal and identify the potter. What I can say is this chawan is definitely post-war, circa 1960 -1970 and very much resembles the works of Sakakura Shinbei XII and Saka Koraizaemon XII from that time period.

This bowl measures 5" X 3.25" and is in great condition. No Box.

Pleasant crackle style chawan with Rimpa influenced design under and over the glaze. This chawan was made by veteran Kyoto native potter, Suzuki Soji who was a student of Tomimoto Kenkichi. Suzuki's chawan now days can cost 200,000 yen and more.

Broad, Chinese influenced conical chawan with red and green enamel floral and circular decoration. This chawan is an early piece by enamel and Oribe artist Kuroiwa Takumi. He is widely exhibited and published for his pottery.

Large, oburi style Shiro-Hagi chawan with notched wari-kodai and profuse crackling around the bowl. I have no idea who made this large chawan as I can not read the seal, partially covered with glaze.

The are a few small spots of glaze loss as can be seen in the pictures, but all in all, this is a very handsome and strong chawan that looks great on a shelf. No box.

Rich and elegant kannyu, crackled layer, seiji celadon by Furukawa Toshio. This chawan, very much in the style of Shimizu Uichi has a beautiful seiji glaze over a perfectly thrown iron clay body.

Furukawa Toshio (b. 1949) is well known for his celadon and copper red pottery and he has been widely exhibited and illustrated both in and outside of Japan.

This chawan measures 5.7" X 2.75" and is in perfect condition and comes with its original artist signed box.

Potent green Iga-Oribe vase by noted master Japanese potter; Kishimoto Kennin (1934-). This roughly faceted mentori vase has varying hues of green and an overall iridescence across the body. A large Egg shaped Zogan vase by Kobayashi Seiji enclosed in the original signed wooden box. Enigmatic lines score the oblong body, the map-like surface filled with blue, green and silver. Seiji is best known for this Zogan technique, and this work is a superb example. It measures 11-1/2 inches (29 cm) long, 7 inches (18.5 cm) tall and is in perfect condition. Large Aka-Shino mizusashi with it's original ceramic lid. This Momoyama influenced mizusashi is by Kato Yoshiaki (Jumei) who has won a number of awards and is recognized for his tea wares.

Exceedingly well fired Shigaraki mizusashi resembling two ash covered stacked stones. This ash and charcoal covered mizusashi is an enigma. The signature is illegible but the piece is obviously a work of one of the most talented Shigaraki potters of the post-war period. Possibly Furutani Michio, Ueda Naokata or Juho, Sugimoto Sadamitsu or at least someone of that caliber. I will leave the sleuth work to the next owner.This piece is positively medieval in appearance...

A slight deviation from the norm, here is a scroll depicting the character Tsubo by Shigaraki artist Koie Ryoji in liquid strokes, the outer lines dissipating into the paper canvas. Ink on paper in a dark cloth border and unusual metal glazed ceramic rollers. It measures 19 1/2 by 42 inches (49, 5 x 107 cm) and is in fine condition.

This is a GUINOMI of HAGI WARE by DEISHI SHIBUYA. He is famous for HAGI WARE. HAGI is the pottery of YAMAGUCHI PREFECTURE in JAPAN. Very good white glaze like thick cream. White Celadon Jar Number Two by Kim Young Mi. This beautiful and unusual shade of celadon is achieved by the artist's skillful manipulation of the glaze. 7.5h x 7w inches, 19h x 18w cm.

Serene yuteki temmoku conical chawan made in the Chinese taste, though Japanese. The chocolaty oil spots float on the darker iron glaze as if suspended, or frozen in motion. The clay is a a fine buff stoneware and the kodai, foot is well tooled. The chawan is signed, but has not been read, though it is a fine bowl. It has many similarities to Kimura Morikazu, Kamada Koji and Taniguchi Ryozo.

Though marked, the seal is unread. This chawan was purchased at a store in Hagi. The original owner could not wait the extra day for the wood box, so it is presented here in a Hagi store gift box. It was thought that this chawan was made by Notomi Choun, but I will leave the detective work to the next owner.

Robust, large Shino vase of round form with areas of poured underglaze iron slip creating areas of Aka-Shino (iron red) and Muji-Shino (white)across the piece. This vase was made by the well respected and exhibited Kato Shuntei (1927-1995) who was a true Mino traditional potter.

Matsui was born in 1927, beginning his ceramic studies in 1946.
