I think she has two other faces under this one but I would never take the risk of hating the other two faces and not being able to get this face back on. I often don't like to take socks off a doll. This black doll has a nicely hand painted face that comes for a cottage industry in Georgia. Her face is done by a naïve hand but the colors and style are very nice. She has a tag on the inside hem of her dress that reads, Mammy 4.
She is firmly stuffed with cotton and in really good condition with age discoloration and a tiny hole on her chin. I don't think she was ever played with. She is 15" tall. She is all original and hand made and has a wonderful face.

It is always fun to find something I haven't seen before, this is a black man oilcloth doll. Oilcloth was a heavy duty cotton or linen cloth that was in the old days soaked in linseed oil until it became saturated. The cloth was then hung to dry to produce an almost waterproof fabric.
