This lovely late 19th C. black cloth doll is made with fine polished cotton material, all hand sewn and hand painted. The white band at her neck is part of her clothing and is not a neck stabilizer. The doll and the clothes appear to be hand sewn by the same seamstress/mother/Grammy. The astrakhan hair is the best I have every seen and makes her hairdo look very fashionable. Old, worn, hand sewn, holey, patched, replaced arm, and simply wonderful package. She is heavy rag stuffed, has an old curvy body and is wearing a very early handsewn dress that is sewn on. Her animal friend is hand sewn, stuffed sort of firmly, has funny 2nd generation ears and little black floss stitches for eyes. It doesn't need to be complicated to be great. This antique wooden doll is hand carved and still has some original paint. The face is nicely carved, the body is painted a dark green and the legs and face have a having a dark patina. The head has black painted hair. He has a big hole in his middle that I think was a hole for a jigger pole. He/she I think was a doll first and then a jigger but I can't say for sure. The back of his head has lots of wear so that didn't happen while he was a jigger...
This doll couldn't get much cuter. She is a tight package, stuffed with cotton, the clothes fit her perfectly, figuratively and otherwise. Her face is made as a separate piece of fabric like it was a second face but after looking carefully at her I think it is her original face and it was how she was made. She has on pantaloons, petticoat and calico brown and tan print dress. On her head she is wearing an old straw hat theat is coming apart a little but is so great on her...
The face on this rag doll couldn't be more understated. Just some deepening of color for eyes, nose and mouth. She has a solid body that feels like it is stuffed with rags. Her arms end in little flat fabric with stitches for defined fingers but no stuffing, does the job with no big deal. She has on a faded red calico dress with a black and white calico apron. The dress is a little long but fits her nicely. Her arms and legs are jointed so she sits well. She is 12" tall and is circa 1890.
Alice has blue eyes, orange nose and red line mouth that is sad or more likely it was straight across and now the ends are not tacked down so they droop. She is hand sewn from a nice homespun linen but her legs are a cotton and of a lesser quality. I think the legs are original maybe they ran out of the homespun. She has on a sweet white dress with lace at the top and front for trim and a belt sewn on with the name, Alice, embroidered on it...
I have owned this doll for 30 or more years and I never found the right clothes for him and I like his looks without clothes. When I took the pictures today of him I suddenly thought, maybe it is a her and not a him. I am not sure and I guess it doesn't matter, I still like the doll without clothes...

Yes, I think college professor and by the looks of his hair, probably not married. He is all original and has his clothes sewn on, is C. 1890-1910 and 15" tall.
Isn't he just great! He has on original clothes, maybe the jacket was added, and in a crazy way his flowery print combo suits him. Under his jacket, both his pants and his corduroy vest are sewn on. He is cotton stuffed and very soft and floppy, so leaning against another doll or sitting in a chair helps display him.
He is in very condition with just a bit of a ragged hem on the bottom of one pant leg. Framing his face he has a blond fur strip representing hair. His face has the best button eye...
Here face is hard to read, her eyes are big round buttons, her nose is one with her eyebrows, her mouth is a V turned upside down, and two circles on either side of her head for ears. She is big and rag stuffed heavy, (I love that). On the top of her head is a braided top knot in the shape of a donut. She is 28" tall, all original except her her clothes that are old and look good on her. So many cloth dolls, all made with cloth and some imagination, can be so different and look so wonderful C. ...
