This little pint sized cloth doll has a very intricately embroidered face. Very tiny schooled stitches, so nice. She is all hand sewn, I believe that her clothes are all original and her socks are knitted two tone so they look like shoes and socks. Really very clever. Very much played with cloth doll with a painted face and great ears. At one time her cheeks were round circles of pink not it looks like dirt from play. What a cutie of a simple rag doll with embroidered face, broad chest and arms that ends in little fists. Now I think he is a little boy but his blue striped pants have a little lace trim so maybe a little girl. This dear little black doll came right out of a house in Tennessee. A very unusual and great topsy turvy doll with a watercolor painted face. She has blue eyes, a perfect little kewpie doll mouth, reddish hair and a flaunty hap framing her face. The black doll has a red bandana tied around her head, she has white eyes and mouth and a sensible yellow dress with a black checked apron. The face on this rag doll couldn't be more understated. Just some deepening of color for eyes, nose and mouth. She has a solid body that feels like it is stuffed with rags. Her arms end in little flat fabric with stitches for defined fingers but no stuffing, does the job with no big deal. She has on a faded red calico dress with a black and white calico apron. And I believe her! She is a no nonsense doll, stern but not mean. At 27" she sits and stands tall, her body is strong and firm and her head is upright. She is fully jointed and has fingers and thumbs. Her hands are unique, the maker sewed the outline of the fingers with the two pieces of cloth face out and then cut around the outside so there is a raw cut that is a bit messy looking but it worked. Very nice Beecher doll by a cottage industry in Elmira NY missionary group from 1893 to 1910. They followed a pattern but each doll is just a little different as the sewing was a group project.. This one has been recovered with black fabric over the original brown fabric. The brown fabric was not that sturdy and is often in fragile condition. It is always fun to find something I haven't seen before, this is a black man oilcloth doll. Oilcloth was a heavy duty cotton or linen cloth that was in the old days soaked in linseed oil until it became saturated. The cloth was then hung to dry to produce an almost waterproof fabric. I think she has two other faces under this one but I would never take the risk of hating the other two faces and not being able to get this face back on. I often don't like to take socks off a doll. Antique little black doll all hand sewn with a really nicely embroidered face. Her little eyebrows are almost up to the top of her head and her mouth is in a little warped O.
