One of dozens of drawings by this artist that I recently acquired, (ask to see others, not shown in my shop) this is a fine image in soft pencil and ink on paper, the drawing itself 10" by 13 1/2", in a simple frame without mat, signed with initials at right and dated '65, by California and Massachusetts listed artist DAISY MARGUERITE HUGHES (1882-1968). Hughes was born and died in Los Angeles but in between she spent much time in the Provincetown art colony on Cape Cod...

Caricature of Martin Heflin by Allen Stone. Heflin was a famed political operative in Washington DC during the 1940s and 50s. He is the brother of movie star Van Heflin and was a poker playing buddy of FDR.

A modernist line drawing of a man in thin marker or ink, unsigned, the artist unknown, detail of the face especially indicative of the skill of the artist. The work probably dates to about 1970. Size 7 1/2" by 4" inside the mat, and 10 1/4" by 6 3/4" in silvery wood frame. Condition is excellent. Word "Al" written in pencil on reverse side. There are reflections in the images.

Pastel on paper drawing of two female figures in black, possibly a mother and her daughter, 23 1/2" by 17 1/2", and narrow frame. I do not see a signature or date, though I believe the paper is likely from the 20th century. The drawing has not been properly framed (no mat) so there has been some contact with the glass...

An accomplished ink drawing of three women and a male flute player at right, after Pablo Picasso, signed in pencil at lower right by the famous international art forger, ELMYR DE HORY (1906-1976). The 13 3/4" by 18 1/4" work (20 1/4" by 25" in interesting framing incorporating mirrors in the margin areas) is a fine example of the work of De Hory, the Hungarian-born man who went on to become perhaps the world's most famous art forger by mid century...

A charming, signed, pastel portrait by Dorothy Colles (1917-2003) who was (according to an obituary published in the Independent newspaper) "gifted in portraits of children". This picture was drawn circa 1963 (please see our other Colles picture) and was a commissioned piece for an advertising poster. Dorothy Colles has exhibited through the Royal Academy and the Royal Society of Portrait Painting. Condition - excellent. The picture 20 inches by 17.7 inches (51cm x 45cm)...

Dorothy Colles (1917-2003) was, according to an obituary in the Independent newspaper,"gifted in portraits of children". Otherwise excellent condition. The picture 19.5 inches by 17.3 inches (49.5cm by 44cm)

A PAIR of Mid Century drawings, consisting of concentric line patterns and overlapping forms, typical of the imagery, whether in sculpture, drawing/painting or graphics, of acclaimed Spanish modern artist AMADEO GABINO (1922-2004). Each is drawn in brown ink and measures 12 3/4" by 15 1/2" (13 3/4" by 17" in black shadowbox type framing over an inch deep). Some of the darker lines are interestingly also scored into the paper, like deep cuts...

Otto Soglow (December 23, 1900 – April 3, 1975) was an American cartoonist best known for his comic strip The Little King. Born in Yorkville, Manhattan, Soglow grew up in New York City, where he held various jobs as a teenager and made an unsuccessful effort to become an actor. His first job was painting designs on baby rattles. While studying with John Sloan at the Art Students League of New York, his first cartoon was printed in 1919...

Original unframed drawing on old Brownie art board, in ink and marker with hint of pencil underneath in a few spots, each box measuring 2 15/16" by 3 1/2", dated "3-20" and signed at far right "Schulz". Also appearing is "(COPY) NOT FOR REPRODUCTION" and the name "j. f. bufton" on the bench next to the bat. Believing that the work could possibly be an authentic work by Schulz, I have researched the drawing through the Charles Schulz Museum in Santa Rosa, California...

This is a beautiful pastel on paper of the Races at LONGCHAMPS, FRANCE or possibly ASCOT RACETRACK in ENGLAND The work is reminiscent of Alfred MUNNINGS or the early work of RAOL DUFY This work has an additional sketch on the back. The work was probably a study for a piece in oil, as many Artist do. It is unsigned on blue Charcoal paper and framed measures about 19” x 28”

An original botanical watercolor drawing of unknown age, apparently unsigned, featuring leaves and insects, one likely a wasp or similar. The work is very clean and ready for the wall. Some slight brownish toning of the paper seems to be accentuated by the camera; it does not appear that way to the naked eye. The attention paid to detail, by the artist, is impressive. The crisp and stylish monochromatic gray/black/white scheme makes this a neutral piece that will fit into a lot of situations...

He studied with Thomas Pollock Anshutz, Hugh Breckenridge, Henry McCarter, Cecilia Beaux, and William Merritt Chase. In 1907 he traveled to France where he remained until 1910. In France, he greatly admired the works of Cézanne and Matisse, and became close friends with John Marin and Eduard Steichen...
