A charming small painting of a cold winter day in the country, a lone woman braving the elements with her cane, in front of a modest cottage doing its best against the harsh elements. Some smoke comes from the chimney as a hint of warmth in an otherwise bleak scene. Measurements as framed are 9" by 13 1/2". There is no signature. The reverse shows this is painted on a circa 1870's gray English art board from a London supply house...

A PAIR of oil on canvas paintings, one featuring a large sprig of small white flowers and leaves, the other larger one a vessel on a table filled with and surrounded by violets. Both are signed at lower right in red "L. F. Haftzger", and the larger one has "1899" written on the reverse side of the canvas. Measurements are 12" by 17" (18" by 22 1/4" in dark stained oak frame), the other 8" by 15 1/2" (12 3/4" by 20 1/2" framed). I do not see a listing for an artist of this name...

A wonderful pair of miniature portraits of two young near identical twin boys, painted on organic material. Although it might often be a decent bet that any attractive English portraits of young children done in this time period were by William Egley (joking, sort of) I cannot, in good conscience, make that attribution, so the artist will, at least for now, remain unidentified.

Possibly Scottish, and in excellent condition, each portrait has a sight size of 1 7/8" by 1 1/2"...

Oil on canvas scene of two white swans in a small lake or pond in a rural area, 24" by 16" (29" by 21" in wide newer frame), signed in red "W W Caffyn" at lower right and dated there "96". This is an unsigned oil on paper laid on board work, quite possibly an oil study for a more finished painting, circa 1870's, by the 19th century American painter JUNIUS SLOAN (1827-1900), the subject trees silhouetted against an extensive landscape, two ladies in period dress at center left, several houses in the middle distance, and two tiny cows grazing at right...

Oil on canvas laid on board, 21" by 34" (26" by 39" as framed), unsigned, circa 1880 I would guess, the painting consisting of a classic Hudson River view with steep hills bordering a river, a boat completing the scenery. There is a very nice luminosity to this particular example, a very nice handling of the light in the leaves of the trees. The painting has an approximately 5" long horizontal old cut in lower portion as shown, not unusual for a work of this age...

A nice miniature painting done by Christopher Greiner. The sitter is a gentleman in a black coat and tie, but Greiner emphasized the somber feel of the painting by using a background of black and dark green.

The painting has no condition flaws, and is housed in a cast foliate pendant case with hair in the glazed aperture on the back...

Late 19th century American watercolor painting of sheep in a country landscape with trees, 12" by 24 1/2" (21" by 33 1/2" framed), signed at lower right with initials "S.M.G.". The artist might be hard to identify but the work resembles watercolors by such artists as Carl Weber (see example in my shop). The artist has used a combination of watercolor and white gouache.
