A colorful and rare painting of the beloved La Boca neighborhood of Buenos Aires, by the important Argentine artist VICENTE FORTE (1912-1980). The oil on canvasboard painting is signed at lower right where it is dated 1949. Measurements (unframed) are 43 cm. by 54 cm. (17" by 21"). Written on the reverse is "Vicente Forte/Pintor Argentino/Oleo sobre carton/Caserios verdes (Boca). Forte was born near Buenos Aires, where by 1935 he had received an art education at the Escuela de Bellas Artes...

Smith is a familiar artist on the plein air scene and I believe his works are presently underrated in the marketplace. The artist had a trademark style; often the scenes in my experience are simplified, devoid of figures, and in a limited color palette. This nocturne is executed in shades of blue...

Old circa 1950 painting on board of the majestic Grand Canyon in Arizona, apparently unsigned, measuring 17 3/4" by 22", plus pleasingly old patterned frame, 1 3/4" wide on a side. The artist had talent but the work is also fairly primitive, in a charming way. A lot of effort went into painting this. I would almost describe it as folk art. Materials suggest a late 1940's or early 1950's age. There's some wear on the frame especially at lower right corner...

A large (19" by 23") watercolor painting of striking desert formations of the Southwest, with distinct modernist overtones, signed at lower right by listed artist MYRTLE MAE HOFFMAN CAMPBELL (1886-1978). The work depicts a dramatic landscape, perhaps in Utah, or Arizona, the geologic formations seemingly mimicking organic forms and Moderne and Art Deco shapes. The signs of man are scant; some shacks and a stack at upper left...

Gouache on paper still life with iris and porcelain figurine of a woman, 20" by 15 1/2" and narrow gold frame of the period, signed at lower left with what appears to be "g. r. becker", and bearing in German script a Christmas (Weihnachten) 1941 dedication, the work apparently given as a gift, on the reverse framing paper. I do not see a listing for a name that would match this signature so am offering this as a decorative work...

The artist, MARIO LORIETO (1919-2003) was a significant figure in the Uruguayan art scene, having studied in the Taller Torres Garcia (Jose Torres Garcia, the major Uruguayan artist), and with Jose Gurvich, Julio Alpuy, and Augusto Torres. He traveled in Europe and has been exhibited in museums in Latin America, Spain, and Italy...

Circa late 19th century watercolor painting, probably American, 9 1/2" by 13" (16" by 19 1/4" framed), unsigned, featuring distant high snowy peaks behind a foreground lake. This was found in California and could be a scene of the American west. More than likely, it is by a listed artist---who neglected to sign his or her work. There is some edge browning from the mat, otherwise the work is in excellent condition considering its obvious age.

Oil on canvas of a verdant, flower-filled sunny courtyard, 16" by 20" and 1 1/2" wide frame, inscribed at lower left "Para Antonio y Cuca" and signed by the artist CARLOS S. SIEGER and dated 1945. I have researched the name online and elsewhere and cannot seem to come up with a listing, though the artist was skilled. I purchased this art in Miami Beach, so a Latin American origin is probable...

I do not see a listing for the artist but this vintage oil is competently executed by a talented hand. The condition is excellent, since this has been protected actually behind glass, in the veneer-type frame often seen on Currier and Ives prints...

A PAIR of oil on canvasboard paintings, each 20" by 24", signed at lower right by the same artist, "McKee", the subjects a rural farm in autumn, the other an eerily empty Hopperesque old house. These were found in Southern California and the scenes may well be Californian. There are a number of artists by the name McKee so it is difficult to determine who may have created these. Both are in need of varnish, and the house painting has a small spot of missing paint in the sky at left, as well...

Oil on board, (ONE OF TWO BY THE ARTIST IN MY SHOP), 4" by 7 1/2" inside the mat (7 1/2" by 11 1/4" as framed) signed at lower left in green "Six" and dated there "32", the subject the iconic saguaro cactus of the southwestern American desert at sunset. Because that species of cactus grows naturally only in Arizona, we can assume that this is indeed an Arizona scene. The painting's style is typical of that of an obscure painter by the name Robert Six, whose works I have seen from time to time in...

This is a very competently executed painting of what I imagine is a California landscape turning green after winter and spring rains.
