Fine original watercolor painted by British Orientalist Augustus Lamplough, R.W.S. (1877-1930) depicting the wonderful temple complex of PHILAE on the Nile, Egypt. Faint rays of the rising sun appear from the rosy dawn behind the large rock on the right. On the bank of the Nile several people and papyrus boats can be seen. Signed on the lower left corner. On the right corner indistinctly inscribed "figures and boats...on foreground of...". Condition very good. Unframed, size 38 cm. x 49 cm...

The date of execution might be circa 1880 I feel, given the dress and the primitive camp set-up. The work is an historical record of African-American life in the 19th century. This is a very finely executed watercolor on paper of a young woman in the clothing of the old country. I've opened this up and see that the work is on paper laid on a board, and it is not signed. The measurements inside the gold mat are 9 1/4" by 7 1/4" (17" by 13" in ornate old frame). I am sure, given the quality of the work (note the care lavished on the eyes and face, in particular), that the artist would be someone recognized and listed...

A 30" by 40 1/2" work on canvas, featuring a large barn in a tawny presumably California landscape, an early car housed interestingly in the structure, signed at lower right by noted Utah-born, western American artist DONAL JOLLEY (1933-). Jolley was born in Zion National Park, Utah, and settled in Rim Forest, California, high in the San Bernardino Mountains, in 1970.
