A PAIR of watercolor paintings of scenes of Los Angeles' "South Bay" cities, one featuring the Manhattan Beach Pier (6 3/4"by 9 1/2"), the other the Palos Verdes General Store (6 7/8" by 9 3/4"), one signed by and both bearing the label of talented local artist Sharon Towle. Fine original watercolor painted by British Orientalist Augustus Lamplough, R.W.S. (1877-1930) depicting the wonderful temple complex of PHILAE on the Nile, Egypt. Faint rays of the rising sun appear from the rosy dawn behind the large rock on the right. On the bank of the Nile several people and papyrus boats can be seen. Signed on the lower left corner. On the right corner indistinctly inscribed "figures and boats...on foreground of...". Condition very good. Unframed, size 38 cm. x 49 cm...
Watercolor on paper painting of a lady sitting in a meadow in a rural landscape with a stream, plane trees, and grazing cows, 11 1/2" by 16 1/2" (" by " framed), with a penciled name "Marie Louise Garfield" on the (very recent) mat only. A nicely worked painting, by an obviously skilled artist, though I do not see a listing by this name, which again appears only on the mat, and not in the work itself. The name may well not have anything to do with the artist, who might have to remain anonymous...
The couple with violin case out of a stormy sun” measuring 28 x 22“, frame size 34 x 28“
The Russian artist was born in 1958 is very active still
The watercolor scene depicts a tent housekeeping camp on the shore of a body of water, with four figures, all African-American, in the composition, making it therefore quite unusual and scarce. The date of execution might be circa 1880 I feel, given the dress and the primitive camp set-up. The work is an historical record of African-American life in the 19th century. Size is 9 5/8" by 13 1/2" inside the mat, 18 1/4" by 22" in the narrow gold framing...

Pastel on paper drawing of late autumn trees in a wooded landscape around a pond or small lake, 21 1/4" by 26 1/4" (31" by 36 1/2" framed), signed at lower right in all capital letters "CLAUDE REME". I don't see a listing by this name so the work stands on its own decorative powers, which are significant. There is a lot of atmosphere in this quiet scene, and the piece is big enough to power a wall on its own. Condition is excellent...

Watercolor on paper drawing of a homey mid 19th century interior in America or England, measuring 9 1/8" by 11 5/8" as simply framed, the work signed "Sketch/Walter Richards" at lower right in white. This was probably preliminary art for a more finished drawing or painting by this well known freelance illustrator. The drawing contains a lot of detail for its modest size: five figures are about to eat soup from a cauldron at midday...

This is a very finely executed watercolor on paper of a young woman in the clothing of the old country. I've opened this up and see that the work is on paper laid on a board, and it is not signed. The measurements inside the gold mat are 9 1/4" by 7 1/4" (17" by 13" in ornate old frame). I am sure, given the quality of the work (note the care lavished on the eyes and face, in particular), that the artist would be someone recognized and listed...
A 30" by 40 1/2" work on canvas, featuring a large barn in a tawny presumably California landscape, an early car housed interestingly in the structure, signed at lower right by noted Utah-born, western American artist DONAL JOLLEY (1933-). Jolley was born in Zion National Park, Utah, and settled in Rim Forest, California, high in the San Bernardino Mountains, in 1970.
