The subject could be a sunwashed port in the mountainous south of France, or, possibly, in Algeria or elsewhere in coastal North Africa, where Bernard spent much time. He was the youngest son of August Gabriel Toudouze, a French architect who was, for a time, the Chief Architect of Marseilles.
