Oil on canvas painting of autumnal trees with a few houses in the composition at center, 12" by 16" (20 1/2" by 24 1/2" in newer frame), signed at lower right in red and dated 1933 or 1939 by Hungarian artist JANOS LASZLO ALDOR (1895-1944). From our European Collection, a fine 19th century original oil on panel by British painter and listed artist William Anslow Thornley (1857-1898), entitled "Moonlight on the Thames." Signed "Thornley" lower left.

Size and condition: 13 inches x 11 inches framed dimensions, approximately 10 inches x 8 inches unframed image size. This painting has been taken care of well, there is only some very minor age-related soiling and minor scuffing to the frame.

The painting's precise age is difficult to pinpoint, but mid 19th century would be close to the mark. No doubt it is a copy after an original Italian master work of the 16th century...

A charming small painting of a cold winter day in the country, a lone woman braving the elements with her cane, in front of a modest cottage doing its best against the harsh elements. Some smoke comes from the chimney as a hint of warmth in an otherwise bleak scene. Measurements as framed are 9" by 13 1/2". There is no signature. The reverse shows this is painted on a circa 1870's gray English art board from a London supply house...
