Oil on board painting (24" by 18", frame 1 1/4" on a side), the subject a dirt road in a flaming autumn forest landscape, birch trees on either side, the sun dappled shadows violet, signed at lower right by the talented artist GEORGE FOREST PAYNE. Payne does not seem to have a biography but his paintings of autumn landscapes and coastal dunes, in the Northeast, have appeared at auction. This piece was found in Maine.
