This is a work with a real WPA 1930's feeling to it, but it is dated 1965. The artist was IDA HANSGEN, or possibly, HANSGREN. (There's a little writing on the frame on reverse that suggests there might have been an "r" in her name). Very surprisingly, I cannot find a listing or any information on her...

Oil on canvas, 15" by 19" (22" by 25 1/2" as framed), the subject the famous Taos Pueblo of northern New Mexico, an iconic scene of the Great Southwest, the painting signed at lower right "Stowell". Included in this picture is a stormy dark sky, the pueblo itself bathed in a ray of sun, and no less than eight figures and one saddled horse. I have researched the signature and cannot definitively tie this to any particular artist, listed or otherwise...

Oil on canvas painting of many pink asters of various shades in a ceramic vase on a tabletop against a greenish curtained background, 18" by 22", 22 1/2" by 26 1/2" as framed, signed at lower right with the distinctive conjoined signature of HARRY HAMBRO HOWE (1886-1966). Howe was a prolific New England artist known for his coastal and White Mountain (New Hampshire) scenes, though he was known to have created still life works as well. He was the son of sea captain T...

Oil on linen laid on board, 16 1/4" by 23 1/4", the simple modern frame about 1 1/4" wide, signed at lower right by listed California woman artist M.E. HODGDON, not dated but likely before 1920. The painting recently came out of Maine, where it had possibly resided for decades, perhaps brought east by an early day traveler wanting a souvenir. The artist, MARY E. HODGDON, is said by Hughes in his dictionary of California artists to have been a resident of Los Angeles between 1912 and 1922...

By the Danish-American sculptor and painter who between the late 1920's and his death created the famous portraits of the presidents on a South Dakota mountain, is this impressionist seascape painting on board, in a delightful range of blues and whites, 20 1/2" by 28 3/4" (28 1/4" by 37 1/4" in the old frame in which I acquired this), signed at lower right by GUTZON BORGLUM (JOHN GUTZON BORGLUM, 1867-1941)...

Oil on canvasboard, 18" by 24", the subject dramatic, fluted, snowy mountain ridges pictured perhaps in late fall, as autumnal colors dominate the creekside grasses in the foreground, the painting signed at lower left "A. Nebeker" and dated there 1966. The location might be but I feel it could be most likely somewhere like Utah or Colorado in the intermountain West, or possibly the eastern slope of the Sierra in California...

Oil on canvas, 16" by 20", unframed, the subject a cut watermelon, peaches, grapes, a pear and strawberries, signed at lower right "Mabel Lemos" and dated there 1948. This appears to me to be a work by the noted long-time citizen of Santa Cruz, MABEL LEMOS, the wife of painter William Lemos and mother of artist Sydney Lemos...

This is a rather large oil on canvas work, 30" by 39" (43" by 34" as framed), signed at lower right "DeShazo", the subject a landscape with houses, church, and lonely leaning telephone pole. The work is not titled and the artist is not apparently listed...

Oil on canvas painting, the subject a ranchette of the Southwest, likely Arizona or New Mexico, 16" by 20" (24" by 28" framed), signed at lower right corner in the paint by the noted, well-listed American impressionist plein air painter (and National Academician) PAUL STRISIK (1918-1998). The artist was born in Brooklyn and received art training at the Art Students League with Frank Vincent DuMond in the late 1940's...

Oil on canvas, unframed, 30" by 40", the subject large boulders and rocks surrounding a small pool of water, executed in a photo-realist style in muted colors, signed at lower left with the artist's name, copyright symbol, and date 1985, and titled "Slow Water" and signed again on the reverse. This is a relatively early work by the noted Twentynine Palms, California contemporary artist and muralist CHUCK CAPLINGER...

Oil on canvas laid on board, 7" by 11" and 1 1/2" wide beautiful original pie crust frame in good condition, unsigned, but without a doubt the distinctive work of noted and prolific Northern California painter RICHARD DETREVILLE (one of several works by the artist in my shop). Detreville was born in South Carolina in 1864, and by the early years of the new century, he was in Stockton publishing a magazine. Shortly thereafter he was in San Francisco, represented by a gallery...

Oil on canvas painting of an extensive mountain landscape, 16" by 20", unsigned, unframed. This is a decorative work that needs a cleaning and a frame. Note how the extreme upper right edge, which had evidently been hidden under a frame, shows the true colors of the work. A regular size, framing this should not be expensive, and it's possible that a careful cleaning to remove the soiling might not have to be done by a professional.

Oil on canvas laid on old board of a country landscape with an apple tree at left and a split rail fence surrounding a clearing, 14" by 21 3/4" (18" by 26 1/4" as framed), apparently unsigned, but dated 1885 in the lower right corner. I feel the painting could be by a listed artist but the painting is not talking. The predominating greens and browns and the old gold frame make for a Hudson River style painting...

This is an American painting from the first half of the 20th century, the subject gulls in flight. The unsigned oil on canvas measures 24" by 36", plus 2 1/2" of interesting Deco style weathered black painted wood frame on a side. I purchased this in Miami some years back, thinking the work bore considerable resemblance to the Florida-period works of JANE PETERSON (1876-1965), a major American artist who painted in South Florida for some time. Her works of that time are distinctive for this k...

This is a work squarely in the Hudson River style by a talented landscape artist of the second half of the century, DANIEL CHARLES GROSE (1838-1900). The scene is a significant river winding among steep green bluffs, a feathery tree at left, the only sign of the hand of man a split rail fence. Signed at lower left and dated there 1874, the work measures 8" by 12" (12 3/4" by 17" in its original attractive old gilded frame). The work is smoky and could benefit greatly from professional cleanin...

Oil on canvas painting of fruits in a shallow dish, 6" by 12" (10" by 16" nicely framed), signed at lower right by the well-known American artist ALEXANDER BROOK (1898-1980). The subdued colors and careful arrangement suggest familiarity with the great Italian still life master Giorgio Morandi. There is a coldness, a stillness, that is quite monumental. Brook was born in Brooklyn, and studied at the Art Students League from 1914-1918. He married painter Peggy Bacon, and was divorced from her...

‏Oil on canvas painting of snowy high mountain framed by a lake and trees, unusually large size for the artist's works at 20" by 36" (24 1/2" by 40 1/2" framed). Although unsigned (and Detreville's output frequently WAS unsigned), the handling, subject matter and color palette almost certainly suggest the hand of the noted California painter. I have owned and sold other unsigned paintings as being by Detreville, and I will stand by this one being by him as well. Detreville was born in South C...

Oil on canvas, 17" by 9" and thin original wood frame, signed lower left "M Stuart", depicting a young woman in greenish gray paint. This is more a work of figural art, really, than mere portrait. The sitter is unknown, as is the artist; there is a listing for a Mimi Stuart (1959-) but I am not convinced this is by that artist. Signature looks as if it could be by a British hand, judging from the style of writing. It is a professional signature, though, and this is not a work by an amateur....
