Contemporary or late 20th century watercolor painting of flowering cacti, 14" by 19 1/4" (22" by 28 1/2" in black frame) signed at lower right by artist Anita Zirkle. I do not see biographical information on the artist but she has excelled here, showing her full talent as she creates a close-up (think Georgia O'Keeffe) of yellow flowers on beavertail or similar cacti. Look at the pistils of the blossom---amazing technique by the artist. Condition is excellent. Black frame shows some wear.

An impressively detailed circa 1860's watercolor of Lausanne in western Switzerland, signed at lower right by listed French artist Achille Gratien Gallier (1814-1871). The 150 year old work is in excellent condition, appearing to have been done yesterday. The scene is the Cathedral of Notre Dame (dating to as early as 1170) and nearby buildings, with tiny figures in the foreground, and even their hound dogs playing at lower left...

Apparently unsigned watercolor on heavy paper painting of an arid landscape in the American Southwest, including a distant mountain, barbed wire fencing at a dirt crossroads, and fading evening clouds, 14" by 17 1/2" as framed in a faux burl frame. When I first saw the image I was reminded of some of the watercolor art of Peter Hurd---the memorable scenes he painted of New Mexico. There is no evidence that he painted this one, but perhaps the artist was inspired by Hurd's imagery...

Jeanie Lea Southwick, American 1853-? was in Japan in 1915 for the coronation where she won a prize for her work. A well-drawn watercolor titled in the lower right, “At the Shoguns Tomb Shiba” (Shiba park is in Tokyo). Signed in the same place Jeanie Lea Southwick. Watercolor over traces of pencil and a little gouache for the blue of the sky in the distance. Sight size 8 7/8 by 6 ¾ inches. Frame 14 by 11 ¾ inches.

Dynamic watercolor painting of a Kabuki actor, in motion, 19 1/2" by 14 3/4", signed at lower left and stamped there, and dated 1933, by the important Japan-born California artist CHIURA OBATA (1885-1975). This is a relatively earlier (1976 or before) work of the noted Bermudian artist ALFRED BIRDSEY (1912-1996). Birdsey was a familiar figure in Bermuda for decades, a prolific artist, the works of whom traveled with tourists when they returned from holidays.
