A very desirable work: the ***original cover art for the November 2, 1960 issue of Palm Springs Life Magazine***, by one of California's best known mid 20th century illustrators, EARL CORDREY (1902-1977). This watercolor and gouache painting measures 17" by 12" and is executed on artist board. It depicts a Palm Springs landmark, the famous tower of the old El Mirador Hotel, dating to 1928. The tower stood through ups and downs in the economy, until it burned down in 1989...

This is a rather large oil on canvas work, 30" by 39" (43" by 34" as framed), signed at lower right "DeShazo", the subject a landscape with houses, church, and lonely leaning telephone pole. The work is not titled and the artist is not apparently listed...

This is a decorative painting of the sweep of the Bay of Naples and its famous Mt. Vesuvius volcano, executed in the classic manner with a few figures scattered in the foreground. A gnarled pine at center provides a dramatic focus point. The painting, 12" by 20" (15" by 23" framed) is old looking but probably dates to the mid 20th century; see staples on the tacking edge, and the reverse of the canvas doesn't look all that old---basically it's a case of looking older than it is...

Gouache on paper painting, 19" by 14", (23 1/2" by 18 1/2" as framed under Plexi), signed at lower left with the distinctive signature of well listed artist ROLAND STRASSER (1895-1974). This is a competently, confidently painted work showing a house as seen from the street, with an autumnal, yellowing willow tree and other vegetation. The artist is best known for the works he created while in Bali, Indonesia, these works featuring local female dancers...

Oil on canvas, 21" by 15 3/4" (24" by 19 1/2" as framed), unsigned, the subject an Austrian, Swiss, or German village in deep snow on a brilliant sunny day. The sharp peak in the background center could be the Matterhorn, in which case we could assume the subject is Zermatt, Switzerland. I'd guess the age of the work as circa 1950's. On the stretcher someone has written "AUSTRIA (TIROL) cca 1950"...

This is a fine painting of the Christmas season flowering plant, the poinsettia, in ink, watercolor and gouache, 13 3/4" by 11", in simple metal framing, no mat, signed at lower left and inscribed to a friend there "with love to David and deepest feelings of appreciation", by the important American artist ABRAHAM RATTNER (1893-1978). Rattner was born in Poughkeepsie, New York. During World War I he was a camouflage artist, serving in some of the major battles of the war...

Constantin Kluge was born on January 29, 1912 in Riga, then a large industrial port city in the Russian Empire. Kluge was born into a family of means and some status. His paternal grandfather had spent years in France studying the cultivation of vines and wine making. Returning to Russia he developed a successful winery. Kluge's father, also Constantin, was a member of the Russian Army General Staff and a White Army sympathizer...

Watercolor on paper, 12" by 17", unframed (white mat only, in protective sleeve), executed in a modernist style reminiscent of famous Swiss artist Paul Klee, the scene including three figures and several Old World style stone towers and other suggested architecture depicted in an almost cubist manner, signed at lower right and dated there "62" by the listed Swiss artist ROMOLO ESPOSITO (1913-1991). This work is hard to describe but easy to appreciate...

A pleasing image of what appears to be a colonial church, perhaps in Brazil, or elsewhere in Latin America, or Mediterranean Europe (Portugal?----the architecture of the building suggests Brazil or Portugal) where palm trees grow; the apparently unsigned work, 7 1/2" by 5 1/2" (12" by 10" in gold framing) is, I believe, a monotype...

Watercolor painting of a young ballerina-like ice skater on a frozen pond, 9" by 12 1/2" (17 1/4" by 20 1/4" framed), signed in red at lower left by gallery artist Craig Smith. There seems to be little internet information on the artist, though another work in my shop by him, an oil, comes with a business card showing that he exhibited at a Carmel, California gallery in the mid 1980's. The present work seems to pre-date that by a number of years----perhaps circa 1950's or 1960's...

This is a mixed media work by the eminent, major Iraqi artist KHALID AL RAHAL (1926-1987), the subject being seven individuals grouped into what looks like two families with children. The painting is apparently a plaster mix covered by resin, on panel, standing out in three dimensional relief, and then painted, the work measuring 15 1/2" by 19 1/2" (21 3/8" by 25" as framed). It is signed at lower left "Kalid" and dated there "64". The artist is one of Iraq's most famous, and works now sell ...

Watercolor painting of some age, 13" by 10 1/2" (22" by 18" framed), the subject simply a tree, but, that subject is handled very beautifully, and the work is signed at lower right by artist Paula Day (on whom I find no information). The interpretation of light and color belies the hand of a talented artist. Judging from the framing materials this dates no later than the mid 1960's and likely earlier. I recommend a new mat only; the frame can be retained.
