It also bears a handwritten label with the signature of the artist and the title of the painting (Haiti #7). 7" by 10" painting alone, 12" by 15" in its original frame. Elizabeth Fisher Washington 1871-1953 Washington was the great-grandniece of President George Washington and a highly regarded miniaturist and portrait painter. She studied at the Philadelphia Museum School of Industrial Arts and at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts under Hugh Breckenridge and Fred Wagner. There she won the Cresson Traveling Scholarship in 1912. Elizabeth also a member of the Plastic Club. Her works have been exhibited all over the U.S...

Oil on masonite portrait of a classic man of Bavaria with his traditional hat and shirt, 15 1/2" by 14" (23 1/2" by 21 1/2" framed), signed at upper left corner and dated 47 by the well listed German artist ANDREAS MITTERFELLER (1912-1972). The artist created traditional horizontal format landscape works which appear frequently at auction in Germany, but I see only a very few portraits or genre works in the records...

Circa 1930's or 1940's oil on canvasboard painting of a cognac bottle on a table top, an apple, lemon and orange completing the composition, signed at lower right "Henri Martin". The work besides an impressionist almost Pointillist hand, possesses a certain modernity particularly in the handling of the background. The painting would brighten dramatically with a cleaning to remove the old varnish and soiling. Measurements are 20" by 16" and 31" by 26 1/2" in the heavy, classic, dark oak frame...

An old watercolor painting of the famous Brandenburg Gate in Berlin, Germany, unsigned, circa 1940. The piece measures 9 1/4" by 7 1/2" inside the double mat and 14 1/4" by 11 1/2" as framed. The frame is modern and functional. Note the detail, including tiny figures and old cars and even double-decker buses. The gate, which dates to the 1730's, was severely damaged in World War II. I believe the artist may have created this during the war or just before it...

An accomplished watercolor of a spooky old Victorian house on a city block, signed at lower left by artist JOHN W. ATTERBURY and dated there 1944. The work measures 14" by 20" (24" by 29 1/2" in old stained oak wood frame). Titled in pencil "Yellow Windows" at lower center, the artist has created a work with very American qualities, and reminiscent of Edward Hopper's strangely empty and lonely structures, or perhaps those of Charles Burchfield.
