Watercolor on paper painting of an impressive, jagged high mountain peak above a lake, 5 1/2" by 9 1/2" inside the mat (9 3/4" by 12 3/4" as framed), signed lower right, bearing the artist's label and title "Mt. Rockwell/Glacier National Park" on reverse board. This is a work by the California artist RICHARD LEROY CORBALEY (1882-1960). Corbaley was born in Indiana and according to the biography in Hughes' Dictionary of California Artists, he was in Los Angeles by 1902...
Contemporary watercolor of the famous Pirates Alley in the French Quarter of New Orleans, 10 1/2" by 6 1/2" (18" by 14" in newer framing), signed at lower right. The work is beautifully painted by a talented hand that I cannot identify. Condition is excellent. There is a little bit of loss in the frame at upper left corner and lower center, showing as red areas. Some gold paint would cover these. See many other works of New Orleans in my shop.
This fine old work (15 1/2" by 20", 19 1/2" by 31" framed) is a peaceful and poetic scene of a house by a lake, mountains visible beyond, the crescent moon above, signed lower right and dated there 1883 by the well known American 19th century painter EDMUND DARCH LEWIS (1835-1910). This is likely a scene from the Adirondacks or the White Mountains of New Hampshire...
Oil on canvas painting of a coastal village in England, 14" by 24" (20 1/2" by 30 1/2" as nicely framed in mid 20th century gold frame), signed at lower left "W. Thornbury". This work is by a prolific (over 1,000 works in the auction record), talented, well listed, English artist who was active in the second half of the nineteenth century, WILLIAM THORNLEY (approximate birth date 1830, death date circa 1898 though I have seen online that he was active through 1903)...
Painting on board of a kneeling stylized Native American male figure holding ceremonial staff and feathers, 21 3/4" by 23" (28" by 29 1/2" as framed), signed at the lower left by artist RED HAT. This work likely dates to the period between the late 1940's and about 1955 I would guess. The streamlined style reflects the Moderne and Art Deco movements earlier in the century. I do not see information on the artist...
This is a most attractive watercolor on paper painting of a landscape with feathery trees bordering a foreground area, and a wider view beyond, 11 1/2 by 14 1/2" in modern inexpensive protective-only framing, unsigned. Found in New England, it reminds of California eucalyptus school work. The artist would likely be someone listed. The age could be circa 1920's to 1950. The work sorely needs a proper mat and framing...
Pastel on paper drawing of desert mountains and cacti, 17" by 23" (24" by 30" framed), signed at lower right in pencil and dated there 1922 by listed southwestern American woman artist BETH MacLAFFERTY BLAKE (1901-1993). This would have been among the earlier works of an artist who was born in Berkeley, California and went on to become a well regarded talent in the Southwest. Blake was a pupil of Perham Nahl, Ray Boynton, Hans Hofmann, Chiura Obata, Karl Neuhaus and Millard Sheets...
Watercolor and gouache painting on paper, circa mid 19th century, of a house by a canal or waterway, with several figures in the image, unsigned, measuring 14" by 9 1/2". There is a simple frame as well (not pictured, but available at no extra cost, with the painting). The work is charming and clearly antique...
**ONE OF THREE ORIGINAL WORKS BY THE ARTIST IN MY SHOP**Gouache on paper, 13 1/2" by 11 1/4" in an old dark stained oak frame, the subject a lovely young lady contemplating a butterfly which has happened to have landed on her fingertip, signed on a fragment of the original work affixed to the backing, by the listed California and Illinois artist MARGO ALEXANDER (1894-1965). This is a whimsical and very feminine subject that would be a fine addition to a lady's dressing area perhaps...
Watercolor on heavy paper of trees leaning over a lake, a swooping bird and small boat with primitive figures in the right lower portion, 12" by 21 1/2", signed at lower left "J. H. Dore" or "T. H. Dore". This is a late 19th century work with a primitive and folky touch. The green mat is too wide. Reframe this charming work with a smaller mat for optimum presentation.
Found in New Hampshire, this is an antique unsigned watercolor of a rocky coastline, sailing boats on the horizon. Measuring 13 1/2" by 19 1/2", the work on paper is glued down to an 1893 Salem, Massachusetts legal directory, the edges of which are crumbling. Those edges should probably be trimmed, and the watercolor then framed to preserve it for another century. Though simple and monochromatic, this is a work well worth preserving. One corner is brittle.
Old early 20th century painting of a thin line of trees bordering a waterway, executed in a lovely impressionist palette with excellent handling of light, 17 1/2" by 21" as framed, signed in red at lower right corner "Chatterton". Though found in Ogunquit, Maine, in an art colony area where the well known American artist Clarence Chatterton was known to have painted, the signature does not resemble that of Chatterton, who was a student of Edward Hopper...
Oil on canvas, 19 1/2" by 25 1/2" (25 1/2" by 31 1/2" as framed)---(possibly an inner frame, the outer one long since separated), apparently unsigned, circa early 20th century, the subject the famous and unique twin Thatcher Island lighthouses (also known as Cape Ann Light Station), about one mile off the coast of Rockport, Massachusetts. The lighthouses were erected in 1861 as a pair, thereby aiding navigation by mariners. Each is 124 feet in height...
Oil on canvas laid against board painting of historic ancient structures apparently on a coastline, 11 1/2" by 9" (19" by 16" framed), signed at lower left in Hebrew script. There is a second painting on the reverse signed "Hausner" and dated 1979. A reader of Hebrew has confirmed that the signature in that language also reads "Hausner". The scene of buildings is almost expressionistic as opposed to impressionistic. There is a brooding darkness to the sky and a vigor to the brushstrokes...
Oil on canvasboard painting of a green coast, a stand of foreground trees in late autumn colors giving fine depth to the scene. The artist did not sign the work, which likely dates to the 1950's judging from frame and board. There is a small area of flaked paint in the trunk of the most prominent tree. Overall a nicely done work that would be improved with a gold frame. Measurements are 20" by 24" and 26" by 30" framed.
Early twentieth century impressionist painting of one of New Orleans' famous courtyard subjects, 9 1/4" by 7" as framed, signed at lower right corner "Don Juan"...
Found recently in Maine, this is an antique oil on board painting, 12" by 14 3/4" as framed, unsigned, the subject purple grapes and a ripe peach, the autumnal grape leaf suggesting the season of harvest, all on a marble ledge or table, with a distant view beyond. The gray academy board, style and framing suggest a date of execution of about 1880. The painting is very American in feeling, bordering on folk art as there's a naivete. The frame has wear and an obvious loss at lower left corner. ...
Attractive watercolor on quality watercolor paper painting of a Mediterranean style estate with red tiled roof, tall cypress trees and exquisite ironwork and stonework, 12 1/2" by 19" (18" by 25" framed), signed at lower left by French artist "L. SEILLARD". There is a small listing for the artist, and some trail of watercolors and a painting or two in the auction records. Those works include Aix-en-Provence landscapes and even a "young girl with turban", leaving the possibility that the artist...
Early watercolor on paper of flowers, I think petunias, in a ceramic vessel, 11" by 14", 17 1/2" by 20 1/2" as framed, signed at lower right indecipherably, and possibly dated 1901. I believe the artist is likely listed, considering the quality of the drawing. The paper was laid long ago on a board, as shown. Condition of the image area is excellent, with colors true and not faded.
Old, antique oil on fine weave canvas laid on board painting of trees, distant small structures and a wooden footbridge in the foreground crossing a stream, 17 3/4" by 23 3/4" (23" by 29" as framed), apparently unsigned, and likely executed at the end of the 19th century. The rather naïve painting is very mellow and easy to live with; a classic antique American old landscape. The surface is evenly soiled, consistent with age, giving the painting that old patina. I believe that some areas at cen...
Oil on canvas painting of a traditional German house or cottage in a forested landscape, 20" by 28" on the stretchers, 23" by 31" as framed, signed at lower right by artist "M. Lichtmann" and dated there 1920. The painting is beautifully executed, though there is very little information on the artist. There is stable craquelure, and a slight drip of foreign matter at center left, though the painting can be placed on the wall as-is.
Oil on canvasboard painting of the famous white Sacre Coeur church in Montmartre, 19" by 23" as framed, signed at lower left "M. Plagnier" or similar, created circa 1960's. At center bottom is "Paris, Sacre Coeur". This is a kitschy sort of painting that will grace your mid century interior. Condition is excellent.
Oil on canvas still life of red roses on a table with ceramic vessel, 17" by 39" as framed. The painting is executed in the Victorian style, but I think it probably dates to the final years of the 19th century or early years of the 20th. I cannot find a signature. There is a framer's stamp on the stretcher from Grand Rapids, Michigan, giving some hint as to its origin perhaps. Also the corner keys are of the post-1885 style. Considering its age, the work is clean, but there are several small...
This is a difficult to describe painting----we see a beach on a summer's day, the blue sea beyond; budding clouds, a spiky yucca at left, and what look at first like children's sandbox toys in the sand, until it appears that maybe they're not children's sandbox toys. The "tower" at right looks more like a Greek islands windmill, the "sail" a takeoff from the yucca. There's also a starfish, a bucket, a brightly colored striped beach ball--and a difficult to make out signature. I would guess th...
Gouache on paper drawing of a snowy mountain landscape with low structures depicted almost cubist style in the middle distance, apparently unsigned, circa mid 20th century, 12 1/4" by 16 1/2" inside the mat, 21" by 24" as framed. The cubistic handling of the houses reminds of artists like Andrew Dasburg and other New Mexico modernists, but this is just a guess. The colors are fresh and quite vigorous. The drawing is taped along the edges to a backing.
A large oil on canvas abstract painting featuring dynamic spiky imagery, measuring 38 1/2" by 28 1/2" in its original thin strip frame. The work is signed and dated 1969. The artist was born in 1938 and graduated from National Taiwan Normal University, and later on studied in the U.S. Besides from creating art, Yang has established galleries in the U.S. and Taiwan, as well as participating in international art exhibitions. A work brought $24,000 at auction in Taipei in 2007 and others have be...
Beautifully executed in black and gray with minimal color, understated still life of an old style tin coffee pot, cooking pot, and white cup, 8" by 10 1/2" inside the mat, 15 1/2" by 17 1/2" as framed. There is possibly a monogram in lower right corner but I cannot attach it to any particular artist. The item is in a frame that evidently once came with a work by American landscape artist George Renouard, as the title on the label is "New Jersey Farm"---and there are old Butterfields auction la...
Vintage watercolor painting of the famous miniature drawbridge in the far western part of the island (Somerset Parish), actually signed twice at lower right "Worcester" or (less likely) "Norcester", and dated "42". I am so far unable to connect this to a known, listed artist working in the islands. The work measures 12" by 16" as framed. Note the typical, quaint old whitewashed stone Bermuda house at left and the white roofs and shutters. This is one of a number of Bermuda watercolors in my...
Unusually fresh and well preserved watercolor on paper painting of a pond in a wooded area, spring wildflowers in the foreground, 13 3/4" by 19 1/2" inside the mat, 23 1/2" by 29" as framed, signed at lower right and dated there 1908 by the noted New England artist and teacher HENRY WEBSTER RICE (1853-1934). Rice was born in Maine, the son of a carriage maker. A pupil of Ross Sterling Turner, he went on to become a much beloved watercolorist and instructor. Rice was a member of the Boston Soc...
Oil on board painting of trees in a landscape, 11" by 9" in narrow original frame, signed at lower right by listed artist "A. KLUG". The painting is executed in a very impressionist hand, and is quite lovely, but is also very dirty. A professional cleaning would really be well worthwhile investment. The frame being old is showing its age, with losses as seen. The artist is listed in Davenport's dictionary of artists but there does not seem to be much information available on him or her.
Richly impressionistic painting on canvas of a small pond surrounded by autumn foliage, 9" by 12" (16" by 19" framed), signed at lower right by contemporary California-based artist RON McKEE (1931-) and dedicated on the stretcher and dated there 1987. McKee is a popular impressionist, his body of work including landscape, coastals, floral gardens and European Mediterranean ports. This work is fresh and clean and absolutely wall-ready in its gold framing. McKee's works have been reproduced in ...
Modern painting of a hilltop town of Europe, perhaps in Italy or Greece, 30" by 24" (35" by 28 3/4" in silvery frame), signed at lower right indecipherably. The painting of an historic town is executed in a modernistic manner, almost cubist in spots. The painting might date to the 1980's. There's a three inch horizontal tear at lower left that can be repaired. The frame has a little wear.
Oil on canvas painting of an elegantly dressed lady on a terrace or balcony, a Parisian-style table and chairs with champagne bottle at left, 36" by 18, unsigned and unframed. This Matisse-inspired work was likely painted circa 1970's by a talented amateur artist. The violets, blues and white make for a harmonious color balance and the light is suffused rather than intense and sharp. The painting is slightly soiled and dull consistent with its age but is otherwise ready for display; a frame w...
Watercolor on paper laid on board painting of roses and hollyhocks in an intimate garden enclosed by a wall or structure, 16 1/4" by 13" and 1 1/4" wide frame, unsigned, executed late 19th or early 20th century. The artist's mastery of watercolor is clear, but unfortunately he or she failed to sign the work, which resembles paintings by members of the Stannard family of watercolorists (Henry John Sylvester 1870-1951, Lilian 1877-1944, Theresa 1898-1947). An experienced English art dealer, havi...
Unsigned oil on canvas, circa 1970's or 1980's, unframed, 28" by 22", the subject a ceremonial dance mask and head wear such as might be seen in use in the course of special events on one of the reservations in Arizona or New Mexico. During the late 1980's I was at Zia Pueblo in New Mexico, and was privileged to watch one of these ceremonies. The work is colorful and includes many classic iconic symbols of the Southwest, such as the thunderbird, the snake, the saguaro cactus, tipi, and possibl...
Acrylic on canvas painting in black, red and blue on white background, 28" by 39 1/2" as framed, signed in the lower left corner "J. Brooks". I am offering this as a bold, modern decorative painting, and NOT as a genuine work of the important American artist James D. Brooks (1906-1992). Condition is excellent and save for some wear on the cream-colored frame, this is ready for display.
Impressionist oil painting of stands of white birch trees by a small lake or large pond, painted on the smooth side of Masonite panel, 9 3/4" by 13 1/2" (12 1/2" by 16" as simply framed), apparently unsigned. The scene suggests a northern latitude, perhaps high elevations in the United States, or Canada or northern Europe, but there is little to go on geography-wise. The artist was skilled and created a peaceful little painting in subdued colors. The condition is somewhat compromised, with fi...
Oil on canvas painting of a desert southwestern landscape complete with saguaro cactus, unframed, 16" by 20", signed at lower right "Robert Perkins". I do not see a listing by this name so offer the painting on its decorative values. It is in fair condition, with soiling, stretcher bar show-through/uneven canvas, and two very small punctures at sky on right in a cloud at a few inches above the signature. If you like the painting you could hang it as-is, or you could invest money to fix it up.
Nineteenth century American or European drawing of pink roses, their leaves and prickly stems, unsigned, in an oval shape, 9 3/4" by 7 3/4" (12 3/4" by 10 1/2" as nicely framed). The attention to detail by the artist is exceptional. We could prick our fingertip on the fine thorns. This could be considered a folk art or Victorian piece. It is very fresh and clean, considering the age of the work. Allow for reflections in a few images. What might appear to be foxing is in fact the shadow of ...
Oil on canvas painting of small figures walking a dirt track in autumn along the shore of a lake, 19 3/4" by 24" (28" by 32" framed), signed at lower right with what appears as "Fan UDKO". I believe the work is likely by a listed artist but I cannot come up with any listing from the name, at least as I am reading it. Perhaps more research might identify the artist. The painting is competently executed. A new frame would be desirable as this old one shows wear and staining of the linen, and i...
**PAIR** of oil paintings on canvas either laid down or laid against board or panel, the horizontal image of a young man wearing a hat in a landscape 9" by 17", the vertical scene of a tawny hillside with thicket beyond and black birds in a partly cloudy sky 13" by 10", neither signed but on the reverse of the latter is 20th century writing: "Section from "Rabbit Warren" by Wm. Morris Hunt/Remnant from The Rabbit Warren by Wm Morris Hunt"; on the reverse of the horizontal composition is "from 'R...
An impressive panoramic alpine landscape painting of jagged mountain peaks at sunset, or dawn (actually titled "Sunrise over the Alps", the alpenglow effect captured beautifully, 27" by 39" (36" by 48" framed), signed at lower right by the artist, Waldner, and bearing placard with the above title and again the artist name. The work probably dates to about 1960. It is in excellent vintage condition. Linen liner is waterstained and can be replaced but painting and frame do not exhibit any moist...
Attractive contemporary era painting of seven ducks in flight over a marshy estuary on a cloudy afternoon, 24" by 36", unframed, signed at lower right illegibly. I am trying to decipher the signature but so far nothing fits. The size and a stamp on the reverse establishing the copyright rights of the artist suggest that the painting is American. I am sure the artist is listed. Unfortunately due to careless previous owners, there is a significant torn area at lower right in the rippling water...
Watercolor on quality watercolor heavy paper, 14 3/4" by 20" (18 3/4" by 24" as framed), the scenes a tropical street with historic old wood houses, likely Key West, Florida, and another street scene with a lone figure, signed in pencil at lower right something like "Meish...." or "Weish....."; I cannot decipher the name. The aritist probably created this in the 1960's or 1970's, and he or she was skilled with watercolor. The brush strokes are brisk but expertly placed. Condition is excellent...
Watercolor on paper painting of a traditional Chinese junk near the shore of a reedy body of water, 15" by 11 1/2" (20 1/2" by 16 1/2" in simple blond wood look framing), signed at lower left in pencil with what appears to be the name "Tang". The transparent washes and deft handling make for a pleasing and calming image that is a fine alternative to a print. The work is affixed or pressed against the backing by the glass---there is not a proper mount.
Late 19th century painting of the Roman Colosseum, an historical arch and surrounding gardens and park, signed at lower left "Conti". The piece, which measures 6 1/2" by 4 1/4" inside the mat, and 13 3/4" by 11 3/4" as framed in polished, shiny reddish-brown wood, displays exceptionally fine detail despite its small size. The colors are sharp and fresh and the paper not oxidized. This might be a work by the listed Italian painter Tito Conti (1842-1924) but I could not stand by that so I will ...
Watercolor/gouache on board painting, 19 1/4" by 12 3/4", the subject the interior of a Jewish place of worship, signed at lower left by the well listed Jewish artist MAX BAND (1900-1974). Band was born in Lithuania and spent much of his earlier life in Paris, after study at the Berlin Academy. His works often feature Judaic themes, though subject matter can range from florals to European urban vistas to genre and portraits. In 1940, presumably as war clouds threatened in Europe, Band moved t...
Beautifully executed, fresh watercolor and gouache painting of tiny figures overpowered by steep coastal cliffs, 9 1/2" by 21 1/2" (16" by 28" framed), signed at lower right "L LEWIS" and dated "96". This is a work by the listed English watercolor artist LENNARD LEWIS (1826-1913). The piece is exceptionally fresh considering that it was created more than 115 years ago. Colors are bright and the paper in excellent condition. Note the tiny figures holding a net at lower left, and the many boat...
Watercolor on paper painting, 9 1/2" by 17 1/2" inside the mat, 16" by 28" as framed, titled at lower right "AT DITTISHAM R. DART", signed at left by the nineteenth century English painter who is known apparently only by the signature "F. Walters". The artist painted in many parts of England. This scene is near Dartmouth in southwestern England not far from Plymouth. I would judge the age of the picture as circa 1870. The scene is a peaceful one of a hamlet of thatched roof houses by the riv...
Watercolor and ink on paper painting of flowers in a pot, 15 1/2" by 11 1/2" (23" by 19" as framed), signed at lower left and dated 1970 by the well-exhibited, Chinese-born artist who goes by the name "Chinyee". She was born in Nanjing and educated in Chongqing during the time of the Sino-Japanese War (1930's). By 1947 as the winner of a scholarship, the artist was able to come to the United States for study. There during the Cultural Revolution in her homeland, she attended the Art Students ...
Oil on canvas painting of surf breaking on coastal rocks, 24" by 30" (29" by 35 1/2" framed), signed at lower right by the noted California painter GEORGE SANDERS BICKERSTAFF (1893-1954). Bickerstaff is a familiar name in California plein air art. He was a prolific artist, creating both landscapes of desert and eucalyptus and lupine, as well as seascape. This example probably dates to the late 1940's or early 1950's. It is in very good condition with only a pinpoint loss or two.
Watercolor on paper painting of a tree on a bluff by a sandy shore of an estuary or lake, 5 1/2" by 3 1/2" (8 1/2" by 7" in attractive gilt frame), signed at lower left by the noted French 19th century painter, GEORGES BECKER (c. 1845-1909). Becker apparently did not leave behind too many works, but those that have survived leave little doubt as to the talents he possessed. One especially fine history painting, depicting in glorious detail the Coronation of Alexander III and Maria Fyodorovna, ...
This is a perhaps circa 1930's or 1940's work in an earlier naive style, with a fisherman, sailing craft, and cabin on the shore. On canvas, simply tacked to the frame on the reverse side, the piece measures 21" by 30 1/2". I imagine this could be called "cabin art". If you're looking for a primitive piece for a country home, or even your urban home, consider this charming work. The condition is good save for a small puncture at extreme upper right corner, which when manipulated so that the ...
(ONE OF TWO EXAMPLES BY THE ARTIST IN MY SHOP**), gouache on paper, (12 3/4" by 6 3/4"), and 1 1/2" wide frame, signed boldly at lower left by the well listed Italian artist GIOVANNI BATTISTA (1858-1925). This is a panoramic coastal scene, a common subject of the artist, who painted mostly scenes of Naples, Venice, the Amalfi coast, and Vesuvius. The painting is in excellent, fresh condition. Works by Battista are offered regularly at auction, where they can bring into the thousands.
This is a folky painting of someone's favorite St. Bernard dog, circa 1870's or 1880's (ONE OF TWO SUCH WORKS IN MY SHOP). Measuring 21" by 16" on the original very old stretchers and 12 1/2" by 12 1/2" (and 17 1/2" by 17 1/2" as framed), the painting is a sweet and classic rendition of a treasured pet of the Victorian era. Vintage dog paintings are very popular and collectable. This one has evidence of its great age, with a darkened surface, no varnish, soil/blanching, very slight stretcher bar...
Oil on canvas landscape painting of a traditional home at the edge of a pond in mid summer, 20 1/2" by 17 1/4" (24 1/2" by 21" framed in older gold interesting frame), signed at lower right corner J. D. Prenne or possibly J.De Prenne. I do not see a listing for that name as spelled but will continue to search. The painting is very nicely executed and pleasing to the eye; it's a very relaxing and calming view. Gathering clouds lend an ominous touch, so perhaps a summer storm is about to break;...
Oil on board painting of two clipper ships in full sail on the high seas, 21 1/4" by 27" (25" by 31" framed), probably executed circa 1970's to about 1985, signed at lower right by the artist, AUSTIN DWYER of Seattle. There is a website maintained by the artist, with a host of biographical information, and images of works for sale, both original and giclee prints. Dwyer was born in Ireland but became a U.S. citizen. He received art education in the Pacific Northwest, (where he is best known t...
Oil on canvas, 18" by 21 1/4", unframed, signed at lower right "A. Alvarez", the subject a colorful flower stall "La Flor de la Rambla" in an obviously European (Spanish, no doubt) town. The work is in need of a frame but otherwise is ready for display. Presently there is an inner frame remnant but no true frame.
Oil on canvas laid on board, 21" by 34" (26" by 39" as framed), unsigned, circa 1880 I would guess, the painting consisting of a classic Hudson River view with steep hills bordering a river, a boat completing the scenery. There is a very nice luminosity to this particular example, a very nice handling of the light in the leaves of the trees. The painting has an approximately 5" long horizontal old cut in lower portion as shown, not unusual for a work of this age. There is also considerable un...
Oil on canvas painting of a picturesque old water mill located on a stream in high alpine mountains, 22" by 30" (29 1/2" by 38" framed), not signed on the front side but the reverse side shows post-1885 stretcher keys, and pencil writing which identifies the scene as "The Valley of Jen(bach)? Switzerland", and the artist as "Louise Goodman 1914". The artist does not appear to be listed. The scene might possibly have been painted after an original by another artist of the 19th century. Conditi...
