[NOTE: I think my late husband Daniel Tretiak wrote this in 2007, after he got this site up and running.] Daniel Tretiak has written a book, The Life and Works of Haku Maki, the important Japanese printmaker of the second half of the 20th Century. Maki toiled alone most of the time between 1960 and 2000. His output was substantial, most of it was cool, crisp, elegant. An example is shown above...

Poster from the year 1981 for the exhibit "In + Out City Limits: Boston" exhibition of photos by the famous, important contemporary American artist ROBERT RAUSCHENBERG (1925-2008), **hand signed** in red marker at lower left. The poster measures 25 1/2" by 19 1/2" (33" by 26 1/2" framed--no glass). Rauschenberg, according to the askart listing, is "one of the major artists of his generation, credited with Jasper Johns of breaking the stronghold of Abstract Expressionism"...

Haku Maki did many prints some with interesting backgrounds some not. This modest run of rather large pints had a special black background: it is the texture of old leather. . Maki created and used this technique only in 1981 prints and mainly in persimmons. The persimmons are plump and meaty the green leaves of the fruit are nicely proportioned. Maki did only a few twin persimmon prints and none after 1980 except this one. 81-10 is in frame 2...

This large print is an etching on paper in dark brown ink, and a heavily inked example at that, the subject apparently "Turkish Cemetery", according to a pencil notation in the upper left margin. Measuring 19" by 20" inside the mat (28" by 28 1/2" as framed), the work is signed in pencil in margin at lower left with the distinctive signature of the noted English modern art figure FRANK BRANGWYN (1867-1956)...

Louis Icart 1888-1950 French THis is a fine color aquatint etching by French artist Louis Icart. The title is: La robe de chine,( The Silk Robe) created and printed in 1926, published by Les Graveurs Modernes, 194 rue de Rivoli, Paris. The image measures 15X18 1/4 inches. Hand signed in pencil lower right also with the windmill blindstamp and copyright information in the upper left corner. Very rich color remains, nice condition..This image appears in the Holland catalog as number 276.

Etching of children in a landscape, 8 1/4" by 10 3/4" inside the present mat (the full sheet 14 1/2" by 17"), not signed but printed information on mat provides artist name, a possible title "Hagyateki Anyaga" and possible edition ("5/50"). The artist is ISTVAN SZONYI (1894-1960). A student of Karoly Ferenczy at the Academy of Fine Arts in 1913, he had early exposure to the art colony at Nagybanya and its prominent and gifted figures, including greats such as Vilmos Aba Novak...

A large etching in colors by the famous Czech artist, TAVIK FRANTISEK SIMON (1877-1942), commonly titled "Rue Mouffetard" (Paris scene). The sheet measures 21" by 24" and is presently unframed with just an old mat. The subject is a pawn shop ("Chiffonier") in Paris, the antique curiosities and goods displayed on the street as people mill about. In the plate appears the artist's distinctive monogram and the date of execution, 1913...

Joseph Addison (1 May 1672 – 17 June 1719) was an English essayist, poet, playwright and politician. He was the eldest son of The Reverend Lancelot Addison. His name is usually remembered alongside that of his long-standing friend Richard Steele, with whom he founded The Spectator magazine. His simple prose style marked the end of the mannerisms and conventional classical images of the 17th century. This work is part of a series all dated London 1748, measuring 15x9”

This small green image of a child was produced in 1969. It is in good shape, considering its age. It is 12 of 201 and measures 6.75in x 8.75in (17cm x 22.5cm).

In the 1960s, Haku Maki was beginning his career as a modern print maker. He used ersatz titles for different series of prints: Cell, Animal Song for the Zodiac, Proportion, Work, Figure,and Emanation. Flower Song was another. Here we show Flower Song 6, which I have just acquired, and Flower Song 3 which I have owned for a long time The others are not noteworthy. This one measures 13 x 17in/48 x 34cm.
