This note concerns Poem 70-38, a rarely seen Big Red. NOTE: Daniel Tretiak created the term Big Reds for Haku Maki's large works centered on large kanji in red, usually on a black background and often done in broad strokes. Large ones in blue or yellow or green came to be termed Big Blues, Big Yellows, Big Greens, and so forth.

An Original and numbered 70/100 Serigraph Painting "LAMBDA" on thick paper by the artist BOB STADIUS. Signed and dated 1997, on the back by the artist, including the title "LAMBDA" and 70/100. Excellent condition as kept in a sealed roll.

It has taken some research on the net to determine that this unusual item is apparently an early 20th century facsimile of an incunabula (pre 1500 printing) leaf from a book. JOHANN GRUENINGER (1455-1533) was a major, prolific early German printer and publisher, who developed an innovative method for illustrating books. This sheet on rag type paper measures 11" by 8". There is text in old Latin, and an image of the Trojan Horse outside of Troy, the soldiers entering his side...

Original lithograph print, 1979, featuring, as the AskArt listing so aptly describes, "joyful scenes that depict the plague of childhood in a childlike way...". Leon Bakst, Russian 1866-1924, was an artist famous for his watercolor costume drawings of the Ballet Russe of Paris France. Many we have feature Vaslav Najinsky who is considered the greatest dancer of classical ballet. The drawings are all original with watercolor and gouache and pencil notations and signed. A fine color soft-ground etching and aquatint by the noted, prolific Czech master artist TAVIK FRANTISEK SIMON (1877-1942), featuring the famous and much-loved "bouquiniste" bookstalls along the Seine in Paris, Notre Dame in the mid background. Sir Frank Short 1857-1945 British This is an original pencil signed mezzotint by British artist Sir Frank Short. The subject is Sir Francis Seymour Haden aged 74. Haden was the "Father Figure of the British etching Revival". This image measures 11 1/8X14 1/4 inches. This mezzotint was created after the painting by G.P. Jacomb Hood. This mezzotint is in perfect condition, nicely framed with archival materials.

An unusual and difficult to photograph trio: two heavy copper etching plates and one tin or zinc lithograph plate, the latter signed clearly Emil Kosa Jr., and one of the copper plates signed with reverse-etched conjoined initials that spell out EK and probably also "Jr". All were acquired by me at the same time, so, I believe it likely that all three are by the hand of the noted California artist EMIL KOSA, JR. (1903-1968)...

In 1970 quite suddenly Haku Maki started producing truly large prints. They were dramatic and somewhat unexpected, all at least 24in x 24in and extended in size to 35in x 35in. His huge print of a woman is 36in x 72in. All of these were created in 1970. Then no Big ones until Big Mu done in 1973. Then no more huge ones. What happened to Maki? What happened to the supply of paper? This Poem 70-10 is pretty large--17.5in W x 24.5in H--but it was succeeded by others even larger.
