THREE hand colored French 19th century prints featuring early-day Japanese soldiers, each 9 1/4" by 6 3/8" inside the faded old violet mats, to which each is simply taped at top edge. The prints are unframed. Two have a dark foxing mark, and all are of sufficient age to have acquired the signs of age---paper toning, slight handling creases and so forth. Fresh mats and frames will display them properly and preserve them for another 150 or so years...

From the 1720's book "Oud en Nieuw Oost-Indiën ..." by naturalist, minister and early day traveler François Valentyn/Valentijn, a horizontal format, large unframed antique engraving, 13 1/2" by 31", titled at top "Amboina" (Ambon Island and town, in the far eastern reaches of present day Indonesia), engraved by F. Three fine engravings of Mount Vernon, Monticello, and Independence Hall, nicely mounted and framed together vertically. The framed piece measures 16 1/2" by 11". These appear to be the same images that appear on US currency, and the very high quality of the printing (intaglio?) is similar. One wonders if these have been produced by the Bureau of Engraving and Printing, either as printing proofs, or perhaps as official souvenirs to be sold in a gift shop setting...

This is a fine, limited edition wood engraving by the highly regarded American artist THOMAS WILLOUGHBY NASON (1889-1971). The print is signed in pencil at lower right and dated there 1956, when the artist was 67 years old. At lower left in pencil is "Ed. 100". Nason was a Boston-born artist who by the late 1920's had taught himself the fine art of creating prints in the wood engraving process...
