Haku Maki started making embossed prints circa 1965. These in the main featured embossing that came out from the back to the front. However, I suddenly discovered that a number of prints in the 1976 - 1977 period were done with the embossing going into not out of the front This style or process does not seem to have hurt any aspect of Maki’s work nor benefited it...

In the period 1966-67, Haku Maki did two large series with Song as the theme. There was Flower Song, a series of 10 prints. And there was Animal Song which was Maki’s Asian Zodiac series, with 12 images. It was also a small series with small editions--50 in the case of Animal Song (released in Kyoto, so very hard to find: only one friend has the full set), I do not know who has the full set of Flower Song. Haku Maki's Poem Z depicts a Heart by any other name. Maki began to use this theme early in his artistic life. Haku Maki did these huge prints from 1970 to 1973. This is Poem Reconciliation done in 1970. It is a big image; it boldly flows across the paper. It is clean not busy, dramatic and elegant. It is from an edition of 50. I have only ever seen this one number of the edition. It has a dazzling yellow sun and sharp red tear that balance the kanji in the center. It is signed and chopped and re-signed in black ink next to the chop. Everything clicks. It is 35in x 35in.

Haku Maki was a well-known Japanese print maker of the second half of the 20th century. About 20 of his workw I called Big Red and a few Big Blue or Big Green. In 1981 Haku Maki suddenly produced a modest series of prints with a vinyl (old leather)-like background. I have already written about several of these in my Research Note 8. Now I present another: a striking orange red persimmon with leaves tipped with a special Japanese lacquer and the background in vinyl. This is 81-31 and it is 175/190.

Haku Maki was an important Japanese modern print maker of the second half of the 20th Century. In the 1970s his work consisted of many abstract images of Chinese characters, kanji. Most are quickly recognizable by Chinese and Japanese. This one has befuddled and even annoyed some Asians who normally like Maki kanji. Work 73-5 is a funny, lively snowman--or snow child. It is number 28 of an edition of 103 and measures 9.5in W x 17.5in H.

I first saw this print in a small pamphlet from White Lotus Gallery in Oregon, acquired the print in ways that Du Yuesheng would be proud of and it has rested here for over two years It is a small print but it packs a punch. It shows a prancing dancing woman. What do you think? The kanji in the center of the print is set off by a tear at the left and a sun at the right. It measures 5.75” x 8.5”.
