It was the militias that formed the Northern defense and response to the Southern attack. This sword dates among the earliest of these and surely saw service in the Civil War...

Antique 19th Century Victorian era stiletto dagger comprising a beautifully hand-forged, slightly curved tapered steel blade of a diamond section. It has a diamond-shaped steel crossguard, recurved quillons, and an amber-shade celluloid grip. The scabbard is bound in green lacquered leather and mounted with a brass chape.

This is a heavy-for-its size (about six pounds) sculpture in a heavy, dark wood like mahogany (ironwood?), measuring about 10" high by about 5" on a side. In addition to the dark heavy wood, there are carved teeth of bone, and carefully applied white paint detail in the eyes. Carved into the base are the words "Ngambela Mataa". I have googled the term and it seems to be applied to a figure who was in Zambia in the late 19th century to as late as 1928, when there was some murder there. I don'...
