Famille Noire
Antique Chinese Famille Noire porcelain. Famille Noire (fr., black family, or black palette) Chinese porcelain refers to those decorated with a black background and complimentary polychrome enamel decoration traditionally including aubergine, white, yellow and green. When red is introduced, it may be argued, depending on the manner of decoration, whether the object is truly famille noire (though later). Famille noire porcelain became popular under the Empress Dowager Cixi for whom many old porcelains were purportedly skinned of their glaze and clobbered. There was also demand from early Western collectors of Chinese porcelain. The debate remains alive and well whether any genuine Kangxi (when the palette was reputed to have originated) famille noire pieces predated Cixi's reign. 19th century examples exhibit a melding of translucent colored enamels with a green undertone. Later examples are rather opaque and the colors flat.

A very richly decorated Famille Noire jar.
( Famille Noire is actually Famille Verte with a black background.) There is not only a pair of peacocks, there are also cranes, ducks and flying birds and a lot of Lotus flowers and plants. Apocryphal underglaze blue Ming mark.
Probably 19th. century or older.
On the base of the jar is an old inventory Number which probably indicates that the piece comes from an old German collection.

A rare mirror black "famille noire" enamelled jar and cover depicting two birds perched on a branch of iron red flowering prunus blossom over green enamelled rockwork. This item is decorated in late Kangxi style (circa 1700-1720) but it was made later, during the reign of the Guangxu emperor (1875-1908).
