Cotton and silk, mixed weave haori with shibori asanoha (hemp leaf) pattern which is dyed with the root of murasaki or murasaki-sou (lithospermum), one kind of grass. It is called "shikon-zome". Murasaki was grown since Asuka period (very late 6th to early 8th century) and purple was thought as the noble color...

Hand-woven silk sakiori obi (sash) whose weft is bunch of mixed color of silk yarn and warp is off-white silk yarn. Generally sakiori is hand-woven of recycled strips from old cloth for wefts , however we call the one also sakiori whose wefts are bunch of yarns. Yukata (cotton unlined kimono) with shibori (tie-dye) whose motifs are tomoe (three-way), aboshi (fishing net being dried) and a logo with the character uma (horse). The shibori techniques are: Miura shibori and Ori-nui shibori (folded and stitched). It is hand-sewn and all tie-dye is by hand. Vegetable indigo dyed. Silk kimono worn on the stage of Kyogen which is a traditional short comedic drama. It is often performed with Noh drama. The kimono is made of thin plain silk with katazome lattice pattern and brush dye for green parts. The lining is pongee silk. The dye is all vegetable and sumi. Kataginu and hakama (kamishimo) is worn over this kimono on the Kyogen stage. In excellent condition. 20th century. 142cm x 134cm

Bashofu kimono hand-woven of ito-basho, which is a family of banana tree. Both wefts and warps are hand-plied. The brown warp kasuri yarns are dyed with extract liquid from tree or root of "sharinbai", which is a family of rose, and the very dark blue weft kasuri yarns are dyed with Ryuku-ai, vegetable indigo in Okinawa. Bashofu has been woven in many Islands in Okinawa for everyday kimono or work wear. 20th century. It has some stains and holes. W:106cm, L:116cm

This is a beautiful and gorgeous book titled "Textiles: The Soul of India" by Hiroko Iwatate who is a prominent collector and researcher of antique and modern Indian textiles for about 40 years. There was a highly reputed exhibition of her Indian textiles collection at Japan folk Crafts Museum ( Nihon Mingei-kan ) in Tokyo in 2007 as well as in other museums in Japan. It has 207 pages with full color pictures and captions and descriptive texts in Japanese as well as in English...

Four volumes of sample books of mingei textiles which are all natural dye and handwoven from Aomori to Kagoshima prefecture. Some are designated as intangible national assets, however some haven't been woven anymore now, and some are reproduced. They include precious bast fibers such as fuji-fu (wisteria), shina-fu, kuzu-fu and so on. They also have natural dye textiles such as shikon-zome, akane-zome, indigo dye Arimatsu Narumi shibori, tsumugi and so on...

Cotton cloth which used to be obi (sash) for a casual kimono. It has hand-drawn tsutsugaki design. It was "Nagoya obi" which was invented in early 20th century to make it easier to tie in the traditional style. This is a silk meisen haori ( jacket ). Meisen textile is a kind of pongee silk which is machine woven and has kasuri ( ikat ) pattern. Meisen kimono was very popular among young women as a casual kimono between 1920s and 1950s and many of them have eye-catching bold and contemporary design. Mid Showa period ( ca. 1940s~50s ).
