Vintage Japanese wooden sago (tea scoop) carved in a shape of an eggplant. That kind of tea scoop is used for sencha - a type of Japanese green tea which is prepared by infusing the processed whole tea leaves in hot water. Cleverly and beautifully carved (see the stippling on the leaves by the stem) out of softwood, very pleasant to hold, in great condition. A rare GENUINE SWATOW MING DYNASTY POLYCHROME BOWL, 1570-1650, with overglaze iron red and green. Fair overall condition, with some wear due to condiderable age inside the bowl. As common in SWATOW WARE, this bowl has sand/kiln/grit deposits on the bottom and outside and because of the high temperatures in the firing kiln, it is not perfectly level, but warped as shown in the photograph. Nice old antique black lacquered bamboo and wood box from Cambodia circa 1950 or earlier. This part of a collection I acquired almost 20 years ago. Khmer lacquer is quite rare, not many crafts survived the Khmer Rouge era, and is a lost art. Some wear and restoration as to be expected but no major damage. D: 5cm/7.8in and H: 10.5cm/4.1in.

Chawan, tea bowl to be used in the tea ceremony, of distorted oval shape (kutsu or clog, or shoe-shape). Thick cream-colored stoneware that turned red during firing in the unglazed area, covered with a translucent greenish ash glaze that collected in the bottom and around the rim and is very thin around the sides. The sides are ‘rough’, giving a look into the clay.

A cigarette case made of iron, partially damascened in different golds and silver, inspired by the famous sculpture of the American artist James Earle Fraser (1876-1953) "End of the Trail", which he designed in the late 19th C. A small antique Japanese Cha Tansu (tea chest) made of Kuri (Chestnut), Keyaki (Zelkova) and Kiri (Paulownia) woods. All original bronze hardware including the Warabite handles. Antique Mughal Indian Islamic cast bronze water pipe (Huqqa) base North India or Deccan, 17th-18th century.

It has a drop-shaped form that tapers to a bulbous point. The octagonal beveled sides have an aperture on top and the shoulder, and the top is embellished with a band of concentric fluted patterns.
