From our Japanese Collection, a very fine and very early imari charger, late 17th - early 18th century (circa 1690-1730), decorated with a flower pot, a scholar’s rock, and a large tree in full bloom upon a terraced pavilion, all executed in the typical early imari palette of blue, orange-red, and gilt, with the border done in a rich brocade of flower motifs.

Ordinarily, we do not gravitate much towards early Japanese imari simply on aesthetic grounds...

A spectacular and intricately detailed painted Japanese Satsuma Koro. The painted features display Buddhist monks surrounded by an encircling phoenix on either side, beautifully gilted and accented with flowers and four legs that sport foo dog faces. A large gold gilted foo dog adorns the lid and is one of the most unusual renditions that i have ever encountered, I have not seen another like it...

This monumental Japanese porcelain charger is painted in blue and white depicting buildings on stilts overlooking mountains, waters, and trees among a beautiful waterfall, situated at the banks of a calm body of water with a boat in the distance.

The scenery is surrounded with scrolls in a band upon which lay leaves and flowers. The uniquely rendered waves add special interest.

The back of the charger has what may be seen as scrolling vine and leaf decoration...

19th Century Japanese Porcelain figure of Kintaro in court attire in the style of a Gosho Ningyo (Palace Doll) holding a Crane. Kintaro loved all birds and animals. This rare porcelain figure is signed by Makuzu, a well recognized porcelain artist who is collected by museums and collectors in Japan. He uses glazes in his own recognizable style. 4 inches, 10 cm tall. Excellent Condition. From a prominent and widely exhibited collection.

A rare Japanese Hirado porcelain Netsuke with a movable tongue. The unglazed porcelain of the Hotti has a laughing face with a tongue that moves in and out of his mouth. Arita molded hard porcelain dish. This is one of the first productions for export which were made in small quantities around 1650. It was at this time that the ceramicists of Arita began to cover the edges of some of the porcelain with brown enamel, it is not a trivial gesture because the addition of this brown which is an overglaze enamel alone requires additional firing, which represented an additional cost and above all an additional risk of breakage...

Extremely rare and probably unique porcelain and gilt copper ewer.The body of the object is a Japanese porcelain covered pot of the 2nd part of the 17th century around 1660 coming from Arita of the Kakiemon kilns but maybe from the Yambeta kiln. The pot was transformed in Europe into a teapot by the addition of a handle supporting a horse and a spout forming a dragon in gilded and embossed copper, the lid is formed by a swan. Very fine large Meiji Era Japanese porcelain bowl with a delicately painted floral motif accented with gold gilt highlights. The side of the bowl features cranes in various flying poses. Hard porcelain bowl, produced in the Fukagawa kilns in Arita. Very artistic decor, typically Japanese, separated into two clearly distinct parts. On the one hand, two cranes in flight pass in front of misty Mount Fuji. The mountain and the sky are painted in underglaze cobalt blue and it is the absence of color which draws the clouds. Large Japanese porcelain dish, Arita kiln, compartmentalized decoration inspired by Chinese models from the end of the Ming dynasty. Tall, ovoid shaped vase with broad rounded shoulder and a very short neck, decorated with an abundance of frolicking karashishi (Chinese lions) between blue and pink peonies. Three large shishi in green, white and yellow command the overall space. The in-between space is filled with small shishi in different colors and peonies. Shishi and peony together symbolize princely power.

A very fine Japanese gilt blue and white charger decorated with phoenixes, dragons, peonies and other motifs. There is a six characters Chinese Chenghua mark inside the foot-rim, but I would date it to 18th or 19th century. The charger is in excellent condition besides some faded gilt and one kiln fault spot(see photo #2); no cracks or chips. Diameter: 15-7/8".

Pair Japanese Blue and White Porcelain heavy weight large Hibachis, Ca. 1900, 12" high, 18" diameter(outer measurement), 12 3/4" diameter(inner opening size), very wide flat top rim almost 2 1/2" wide which is decorated with underglaze blue Dragon chasing in the cloud, side panels with mountain scenery with pine trees, water falls inside the Fan shape cartouches. Decorated in underglaze cobalt blue with a falcon perched on the bole of a gnarled pine tree, a band of lappets around the foot, and the rim with a continuous key-fret border, it is in excellent condition. A well made 19th century Japanese porcelain haisen (sake up rinser on stem foot). Rare Shunga decoration depicting a bondage scene within the bowl. The manner of the painted decoration in comic fashion similar to that found on some shunga makimono. Shunga paintings and prints are rare enough but encountered. Edo period porcelains with shunga decoration are exceedingly rare. Good condition. Height, 4 1/2 inches. Diameter, 6 3/4 inches.

This very well made and hand painted vase is a 19th century product. It is 9 ½” high and 2 ¾” wide from the widest part. It depicts chrysanthemum and butterflies over a beige crackled body. There is a brocade pattern design on the top of the vase. The black hand-painted mark “Dai Nippon, Taizan Sei” is on the bottom. It is in great condition.

Circa 1880, this large 16.4" x 2" Imari charger is decorated with two village scenes finely painted in red, yellow, black and gold with a background pattern of blue and gold vines.

Condition: Excellent, very slight wear. No chips, cracks, or restoration.
