A beautiful Nashiji (sprinkled gold flakes) ground lacquer Natsume, Tea caddy. It has an elaborate cartouche on the lid in gold makie, gold and silver on a chocolate lacquer background depicting a stylised landscape (mountain, hermitage river and boat).

Antique Japanese kura tansu (warehouse storage chest). Made of keyaki (elm) wood with iron hardware. The top portion has a large compartment covered by sliding panels with vertical slats. The bottom portion has another compartment covered by sliding panels with horizontal and vertical slats. Heavy wooden braces for strength on sides and back of chest.

A large Persian textile "Suzani" which literally means "needlework". The cotton cloth is hand-embroidered with complex floral medallions and scrolling work with brightly colored silk thread. These traditional Suzani would be used for headscarves, ottoman covers, prayer mats, wall hangings, and many other uses.

19th century wooden netsuke of a sitting boy wearing a shishi mask that is too big for him and hitting a drum in front of him with a striker. These mask are usually used in shishimai dance, and the face of the boy can be seen inside the mask (see Enlargement 2, difficult to photograph). Very beautiful and delicate antique lacquered mask of Xienfang Xiaojie, Miss Vanguard, wearing her characteristic phoenix headdress ; very expressive handwork, remnants of original marouflage.

A large and very expressive, ceramic figure of sitting shishi, lion-dog, with turned head. It is covered in a creamy, white crackled glaze. The open, staring eyes made of inserted glass are rendered with gold. Unsigned. Japan, late Edo, before 1850. H. 35 cm, L. 25 cm, W. 16 cm. Condition: good, but for a few chips, fire cracks and minor area of repair on underside.
First of its kind we have seen with a carving on the table top. A kannon , goddess of mercy is riding a dragon carved into the top and lacquered. Exceptional.

A nicely shaped plate with floral design with bat and peach motif painted on the underside for good luck. Nyonya wares are over-glaze polychrome enamelled porcelains made in Jingdezhen in the Kiangsi province of China for the Straits Chinese, or Babas, whose female counterparts are called Nyonyas, hence the term Nyonya ware. Four(4) Japanese Imari Porcelain Soba Noodle Cups, Ca. mid 1800's, late Edo or early Meiji period, 3 1/8" diameter-cup top rim, 2 5/8" high, decorated Lotus, Peony and other floral design on the Rock garden, in underglaze Blue and White plus some red, green used, highlighted with Gold touch. Two(2) hairline on the glaze, one(1) bruise about 1/4" long, one(1) cup is in good condition. this lot is same decoration as lot #3A13.
Six(6) Japanese Imari Porcelain Soba Noodle Cups, Ca. mid 1800's, late Edo or Early Meiji period, 2 3/8" diameter-top rim, 1 3/4" high, decorated with blue and white and some green and red, Lotus, Peony and some other floral and foliage in the Rock Garden. One(1) glaze hairline on the cup, outside only, not inside, two(2) or three(3) frits on the rim of the cup.
Tang authentic pottery plate with a sancai-glazed inner and outer rim. The alternating and flowing green and ochre/brown glazes give beauty to the simple form of the plate. Under magnification, the glaze shows very fine crackle and the edge of the glaze is iridescent.

19th century wooden netsuke of a Buddhist monk arm wrestling with an oni on a huge lotus leaf. Wonderful subject, excellent carving with superb faces and great detailing of their limbs and fingers. Himotoshi is formed by the lotus stem on the bottom, beautiful patina. Signed RAKUSHI on the bottom - judging by the subject and the first character of the signature, the artist belonged to the Rakumin School and was obviously a master carver. Length 1 1/2 inches.
