Small dish in Chinese porcelain, green enamel decoration of lotus flowers, tendrils and bats, details in black. Two Chinese characters "Shou" are enameled in red and gold. All this symbolizes longevity (shou), happiness (bat) and Buddha (lotus). However the Lotus flower is not exclusively the symbol of Buddhism, it can also be interpreted here as the marital agreement because there are 2 flowers or serenity or self-fulfillment. Everyone will interpret according to their desires...
This exciting little piece is a grey pottery urn from the Han Dynasty of ancient China (206 BC - 220 AD). It has a plain but elegant shape with incised line decoration. The surface has light soil encrustations and traces of root fibers from extended burial. There are no signs of repair or restoration. It measures just under 13 cm in height and weighs 618 grams. This wonderful Edo period antique Japanese tobacco box is made of wood and covered with lacquer which is now seriously aged. In the middle of the lid is small sculptured detail. The box has the original cord and horn tip toggle, and still contains tobacco.
Circa 1860's this box is 4.5" x 2.5" x 3" high. It is truly a piece of old ethnographic folk art from Japan's Edo period.
This is a finely potted and painted late Qing early republic vase with calligraphy on the side.

Condition: Choice for type, intact with a few tiny losses to fingertips and wear to the original paint on the figure. The staff probably a later 19th. century addition.

Ch¨sen Karatsu (³¯õrÌƽò) Chawan with a fantastic vivid glaze. It dates from the late Edo Period, no cracks, no repairs.
This traditional style was introduced by one or more potters brought from the Joseon Dynasty during the Japanese invasions of Korea. It features a black glaze placed under a white glaze which has been fired with straw. The two glazes run together and give a feeling of opposites.
