An unusual Edo period Oribe serving bowl, the color filled crackled glaze decorated with scrolling lines in iron and splashes of copper green. Both inside and out hash mars denote a bamboo fence with blossoms in the fore. A handle and raised architectural elements around the rim and rising to the mouth echo some western influence, possibly indicating original Christian use. Jar or bottle vase has a low neck with a flaring mouth and a spherical body supported on a footring. The mouth’s edge is clear glazed, showing the buff-white body. Glazed with a russet-brown rust glaze suffused with silvery-black flecks, that depending on the light, can yield tones from a metallic red-brown to silvery-purple. Dating from early-to-mid Edo the shape of this unique Karatsu piece is referred to as a “takadai-zara” in Japanese, or high-footed serving platter. Modeled on similar Korean pieces from the early Joseon Dynasty, the platter was made using coarse, unrefined clay with high iron oxide content. The clay which forms the bowl shows impurities, intentional pitting, and small stones peeking through the clay making for an interesting ceramic landscape...
