A very large, exceptionally finely cast, bronze censer in Ming form but with archaic (Zhou) style decoration of Imperial quality. The base carries the six character reign mark of the Ming Xuande emperor (1426-1435) but this item was made in China later, during the early 18th Century. Condition - there is old impact damage with an old repair - please view enlargements 5,6,7 and 8; also the five clawed dragons on the base have had a single claw removed; no further damages or restoration...

Large mask, of fierce expression, with protruding forehead and nose, and large, pierced through eyes, nostrils and mouth. The mask is covered with numerous small holes around the eyebrows, under the nose and around the chin, in which animal hair has been inserted and glued with wax. Wood, with dark-brown, sometimes encrusted, patina. Asia, Himalayan Region , 18th century, maybe earlier. Height: 14 1/2" (36 cm). The mask is nicely mounted on a custom metal stand which enhances its strange beauty...

This is an absolutely rare black Seto chawan ( setoguro chawan ) from the Edo Period.

Blackish-brown glaze amalgamates with a wild and roughly thrown body and a still vivid and strong Seto Glaze. It is very heavy for a tea bowl, 503g. Please note that there is also an interesting kiln mark.

Setoguro yaki is high-fired ware that originated in the late 16th century...
