This is a 19th century famille jaune brush pot with butterfly and watermelon motive incised with a feathery wave like yellow background. The butterfly symbolizes joy and felicity or to the effect meaning longevity. As for the watermelon, it does not hold any symbolic meaning. The nearest fruit that it can be compared to, is the pomegranate, because it has many seeds symbolizing offspring and posterity. This combine with the butterfly becomes very meaningful...
