Nice old antique black lacquered bamboo and wood box from Cambodia circa 1950 or earlier. This part of a collection I acquired almost 20 years ago. Khmer lacquer is quite rare, not many crafts survived the Khmer Rouge era, and is a lost art. Some wear and restoration as to be expected but no major damage. D: 5cm/7.8in and H: 10.5cm/4.1in.
Chawan, tea bowl to be used in the tea ceremony, of distorted oval shape (kutsu or clog, or shoe-shape). Thick cream-colored stoneware that turned red during firing in the unglazed area, covered with a translucent greenish ash glaze that collected in the bottom and around the rim and is very thin around the sides. The sides are ‘rough’, giving a look into the clay.

A cigarette case made of iron, partially damascened in different golds and silver, inspired by the famous sculpture of the American artist James Earle Fraser (1876-1953) "End of the Trail", which he designed in the late 19th C. The interior with the Otojiro's mark with dragonfly. A small antique Japanese Cha Tansu (tea chest) made of Kuri (Chestnut), Keyaki (Zelkova) and Kiri (Paulownia) woods. All original bronze hardware including the Warabite handles.
