The group of small porcelain items known as "toys" is composed of scent bottles, bonbonnieres, etuis, and seals. These were produced from the early years of Chelsea through to the Chelsea-Derby period. (The most comprehensive work on these items is "The Chelsea Porcelain Toys", by G.E. Bryant, published in 1925.)

Seals were carried by members of the upper class and used to imprint a uniquely identifiable mark in the wax used to sign or secure documents or letters...

Late 1600s / early 1700s

Large mountain-form brushrest molded with a fanciful design of a mythical horse prancing over stylized waves. Known as haima in Chinese, this decoration was popular on ceramics in the late transitional period through the early Kangxi period and often seen painted in wucai or enamels on biscuit...

An excellent Imperial blue and white decorated dish. Superbly thinly potted, the cobalt blue and the glaze like all the details of the dish are excellent. Imperial Kangxi mark ( 1662 - 1722 ) and of the period. Old paper sticker, probably an old inventory number of an old German collection. Diameter : 22cm. Condition : Mint

Chinese pair of Famille Verte porcelain plates with blue glaze and color overglaze on white ground, design of fish and underwater plants, each plate has delicately scalloped surface radiating outward, Kangxi Period, mark on bottom, circa 1700. Size of each: 5 1/8" diameter x 7/8" high

C 1760 Rare Chelsea seal of a harlequin boy in black face mask with a metal ring at the top. The colors are magnificent. The seal evokes the Commedia dell'Arte, an early form of popular comedic masked theater originating in Italy and popular in Europe from the 16th to the 18th century. The harlequin alone is rare; a harlequin in blackface, rarer still...

A very rare scroll weight resp. paper weight made from glass and painted with a very pleasing romantic landscape . This painting is done in a typical Qianlong manner on a opaque white glaze and is covered with a thick layer of transparent glaze. Qianlong Period ( 1736 - 1795 ) On the back side of the piece is something like a very small signature which can be seen on the last enlargement. L : 17,5 cm. B : 3,3 cm. H : 1,2 cm. Condition : Perfect.

A Kangxi famille verte plate decorated with a bird and flower scene in the court academic style of the day, with an accompanying seal. Due to the condition flaws of this piece, the price has been reduced to almost nothing (in perfect condition, this plate would be worth $1500-2500)...

An impressive and charming green-tinged very large champagne flute with a conical bowl above a bladed knop, all surmounting a hollow baluster knop. Soda glass with scattered bubbles, as expected.

A Japanese Arita dish, in Kakiemon style, of rhomboid shape with rounded, spreading sides rising from a circular foot. The inside is decorated round the sides with a continuous 'classic scroll' boldly moulded in relief, and below with a design painted in pale blue, red, green, black and pale yellow enamels. The rim is glazed brown. The exterior is painted in enamels with sprays of camellia and pairs of flying birds...

This a Kioto School Netsuke, carved in Late 18th century, that depicts a seated and laughing Hotei. His robe falling open to reveal a large belly. The robe with incised leave branches. Hotei's hand and feet unsually large. Large, faithful time-period chimney himotoshi. Wonderful two-tone patina. Netsuke measures 1.55 inches (3.9cm) wide, and 1.45 inches (3.7cm) tall. It has some age hairlines, common to netsuke this old, but, it is solid, and otherwise, in excellent condition.

A fine pair of small baluster shaped porcelain vases, with a painted blue decor on white background of two dragons chasing the flaming pearl among clouds. Kangxi reign mark beneath. China, Qing Dynasty period. Height: 7" and 7 1/8" (17,6 and 18 cm). Old and very fine restoration around the neck of one of the vases (see photos), otherwise very good condition. Provenance: old French provincial collection.

Small statue of Buddha Sakyamuni, sitting cross-legged on an elevated throne, his hands in "bhumisparsa mudra", backed by a seven-headed stylized Naga sacred snake. Bronze with traces of the original gilding. Partially encrusted patina of green and reddish color. Burma, 18th century or earlier. Height: 10,5 cm. Good condition.

This offered painting dates from the early or the mid Qing-Dynasty around the 17th. and 18th. century.

It was impossible to identify the artist, but it is obvious that he was a great painter of his time...

A larger than average Chinese porcelain teapot (with matched cover) decorated in European taste with "famille rose" enamels and made for export,circa 1760-1770. Condition - there is substantial wear to the enamels and gilding but no chips, cracks or restoration...
