Fine Michael Cardew Large Stoneware Coffee Jug, Abuja Pottery

This impressive stoneware jug was made by Michael Cardew during his time at the Abuja Pottery, Nigeria. The photos speak for themselves! It has the impressed MC and Abuja Pottery seals.

This kind of Mask is sculpted with minimal work taking advantage of natural deformations. The natural material would be tree roots, at least that is the information provided by the sellers. Some of these masks would however be old and used as burlesque masks during the various festivals. The parts with nodules are preserved with a minimum of modification to represent the eyes and sometimes the mouth. This gives each mask a unique look of puffy, hideous faces...

Measures 11 1/2" in diameter and is 3 3/8" deep with sloped sides. The foot measures 8 1/4" in diameter. From the early 16th century, tin glazed wares have been crafted in Granada, with a creamy white slip glaze over terracotta pottery, decorated in blue and green glazes...

Hand made sterling silver and shell letter opener or caviar knife designed and signed circa 1950's by American & Taxco, Mexico artist William Spratling. 5 1/2" long. Beautiful condition with no chips, cracks or dings to the silver or shell. Signed on the end of handle with Spratling hallmarks and eagle 30. Striking pair of large vases by Gouda Pottery of Holland. They each measure 12" high and roughly 7" wide. Each marked on bottom, with both impressed and inscribed marks. Impressed numbers include 2144 and P 503, and in addition to the Gouda Holland marks written, the number 2144 is at the top, with KL 503 and what are likely the artist's initials in a rectangular cartouche JVS. The design is not written on either, and it seems to represent a floral element withing a rather geometric format...

2 gallon stoneware crock or churn by Julius Norton of Bennington Vt, 1859 - 1861. Measures 11 1/4" high and 8 1/2" diameter at base. Stamped at shoulder and neck with Julius Norton's name and location, the #2 below the stamp. This form is sometimes considered a churn, but can function as a crock also. Decorated with the double bird design, very rare and desirable. Very vivid cobalt decoration, with blue highlights over the stamped name, location, and size. Applied slip handles. Salt glaz...

12 pieces of Blue Flower by Royal Copenhagen, comprised of 11 luncheon plates and one serving platter. The platter measures 14" wide, 11" deep, and 2" high. The plates measure 7 7/8". All the designs are hand painted, and show variation in the floral designs. All the plates are differently. The mark on the backs of plates and platter are the Copenhagen mark from 1870-1890, and is comprised of three lines with other blue inscriptions. A large sterling silver goblet with half ribbed cup, Sheffield, 1898, by Cleft Alexander Mawer Clark of the Alexander Clark Manufacturing Company, Sheffield, England. Size: 10.245 inches ht. Weight: 19.7 Troy ounces (including iron bar). There is a slight push-in on the base of the pedestal which produces a slight wobble. No monogram.

English George IV sterling silver wine jug, London, 1829, by silversmith Benjamin Preston. Size: 9 3/8 in. ht. x 7 1/2" x 5 in. 23.3 Troy ounces. An attractive and substantial hot water or wine jug, adorned with applied acanthus leaf motifs and repousse work. and supported on three scrolled feet. Engraved with family monogram in a cartouche, and with later presentation from 1928 on base. Nice condition but with a single push in on the underside where one foot attaches.

Mid-century set of sterling salt and pepper shakers signed by Salvador Teran, one of Mexico's foremost modernist designers. I love the sense of strong upward motion the swirling silver bands hugging the shakers' main body exude as well as the cleverly crafted little screw on "plug" that secures your seasonings are safely kept in their containers.
