This is a set of traditional lacquer bowls from Thailand. There is a single gold mythical animal, balu-gwin, at the bottom of the inside and a three balu-gwin spaced around the outside. The gold rim with key design surrounds the rim of each of the 5 bowls.

In wonderful condition, each bowl is approx 5 inches wide at the rim and 2.5 inches high.

Description: A decent lotus-bud bowl from Jun kiln was in beautiful look. In a tint of the famous sky-blue glaze, the elegant bowl was shaped at the foot ring with regular wall. Developed with darkened colour which was caused by kiln firing, the unglazed foot ring was preserved with obvious burial earth. This unusual pair of Chinese dolls were made with wire bodies covered with fabric padding and then silk clothing. Their heads, lower arms and feet are made from some kind of composition material and then painted. Because of their wire construction, their arms, legs, and bodies etc can be carefully repositioned. The feet are wired together to provide a more stable base...it is a theory which frankly does not always work well.

Each doll is approx 9.5 inches tall in standing position...

Both sides of on this antique printing woodblock are hand carved with 3 pages of text on each side. The text is a poem about the moon. With the upper sections of each page in Chinese characters and the lower text in Mongolian, this is a rare and interesting artifact of the Qing Dynasty reign.

The woodblock is covered in ink from repeated use but the text is still crisp and clear. Measures 9 inches x 14 inches.

Because the Japanese used a minimum of furniture and usually sat on the floor, frequently an arm rest, kyosoku, was used either singly or in pairs. This simple wooden Meiji period arm rest would have been appreciated for both its form and finish. The wood was first burned with hot coals and then scrapped with the result that the softer sections of wood would be carved out more deeply. This process would leave the "wavy" sculptural pattern on the surface of the wood.
