Note 10 part II continues to discuss the evolution of Maki's prints.

Poem 70-19 is one of the fairly small group of deep blue prints that Maki made. This one is 5.75 in W x 8.5in H and created in 1970. It is in good condition, with some toning due to its once having been framed.

Lawrence Stephen Lowry (1887-1976) is one of England's most beloved modern artists, his body of work, generally executed in a distinctive naive style, focusing on (as Wikipedia listing says) "scenes of life in industrial districts of North West England and 20th century urban landscapes peopled with human figures referred to as 'matchstick men'". He was a generally shy and not especially sociable, humble man, who turned down a number of honors such as knighthood, by an appreciative nation...

This is another of Haku Maki’s depictions of the kanji天 for day, heaven, sky. It’s a fairly easy character to make stark and lovely. The next year, 1971, he did another black-and-white dramatic rendering of the same kanji (Poem 71-51, which is below at #1452042 (stock #1077). The print is 12in square and in excellent condition.

After the great world-renowned master MARC CHAGALL (1887-1985), this is the 1972 Galerie Maeght lithograph poster "Artist as Phoenix", issued in an edition of 5000. The print has fresh bright colors, although it is evenly rumpled from age (no creases, just not a flat surface). It can be shipped rolled in a tube (for lower cost shipping than indicated) or with green metal mid-century spring-clip style poster frame (the present shipping quote)...

A print I first thought could be Pennsylvania Dutch imagery, but which now appears to be of some European origin, perhaps the Appenzell area of Switzerland, or elsewhere in Europe. In 1968 Haku Maki completed his Animal Song series. It was 12 different prints, one for each year of the Chinese/Japanese zodiac. Each print had the title Animal Song and the kanji for the animal, which was not translated. This print, Animal Song [dragon], 14/50, is a beautiful Maki red. Leonard Baskin, American, 1922-2000, "Portrait of a Man," Wood engraving, image size 20 x 13 1/2 inches, c. 1950s. This is a very rare unsigned proof, which does not appear in the Fern & O'Sullivan catalog. We believe this portrait to be of 17th century French artist Jacques Callot, whom Baskin greatly admired and included in his series of etchings, "Portraits of Ten Artists" in 1964.

Maki's Emanation series may well have been 100 different images. This is an early one. It shows a young man ready to grope a woman’s breasts. Who is the man and who is the woman? Adam and Eve? Maki and his wife? Maki and another woman? It measures 16" x 16". Here I show images of the current emanation and single images of other prints in the Emanation series. For the Andrew Wyeth collector, a color collotype print "Arthur Cleveland", circa 1965, from a limited edition of only 100, **with INK SIGNED-by-the-artist label** affixed to the backing. The print measures 26" by 18 3/4" and frame is 1 1/2" wide on a side. This was acquired in Connecticut; the seller stated that it had been acquired from a Boston gallery in the 1960's by her parents, who had unfortunately trimmed off the margins to make it fit the frame. This is an unusually bright, saturated-color example of the MARC CHAGALL (1887-1985) lithograph "Romeo and Juliet", printed by Mourlot. This is a well known image by Chagall, created in 1964 for the ceiling of the Opera Garnier in Paris. Haku Maki in 1968 did a group of prints depicting animals from Asia’s Zodiac, which has an animal for each year in a 12-year cycle. Maki called this series of prints Animal Song. This one is Animal Song 申, the character for the Year of the Monkey. The print is square, measuring 17 1/8 in W x 17 1/8in H, and is in excellent condition.

One of a number in my shop inventory, this is a fresh and clean example of one of William Russell Flint's fine color photolithographs issued for collectors over a period of decades. In 1971 Haku Maki produced two large prints, one Sun and one Moon. Sun shows a dramatic sun with a red dash all surrounded by a gold field-- Poem 71-100. Poem 72-101 is Moon with a similar design. There is a dark spot in the center. Each print was produced in editions of 156. This pair was offered privately and on eBay by a very insightful seller from Tennessee. After these presumably successful runs Maki did a smaller pair, each with the same title and same design. Both Sun and Moon...
