Lawrence Stephen Lowry (1887-1976) is one of England's most beloved modern artists, his body of work, generally executed in a distinctive naive style, focusing on (as Wikipedia listing says) "scenes of life in industrial districts of North West England and 20th century urban landscapes peopled with human figures referred to as 'matchstick men'". He was a generally shy and not especially sociable, humble man, who turned down a number of honors such as knighthood, by an appreciative nation...

Watercolor on paper painting, 10" by 14" inside the mat, (18 1/2" by 22 1/4" as framed), signed at lower left "Nolte", and bearing a note on the framing paper suggesting this to be Hidden Harbor, Maine (the word "Southwest", as in "Southwest Harbor", being crossed out). I believe the scene depicted would be on the famous central Maine coast, on Mount Desert Island, best known as the location of Acadia National Park. The drawing is executed in ink with watercolor...

Old watercolor on paper painting, a study of trees by a lake, the artist likely American, circa 1920's, 13 1/4" by 8 1/2" inside the old mat, possibly signed at extreme lower right corner but it is indecipherable. There are old framer's instructions on the reverse side. The work was found framed and the frame is possibly available to the purchaser at no extra charge, but it is worn and tired. A fresh framing job will do wonders for this fine old watercolor painting.

One of dozens of drawings by this artist that I recently acquired, (ask to see others, not shown in my shop) this is a sketch in soft pencil on paper, the drawing and frame 10 3/4" by 22", signed at lower right, and dated there '65, by California and Massachusetts listed artist DAISY MARGUERITE HUGHES (1882-1968). Hughes was born and died in Los Angeles but in between she spent much time in the Provincetown art colony on Cape Cod...

One of two works by the artist in my shop, this is an etching on paper, 8 3/4" by 6 5/8" sheet, signed in pencil at lower right margin "PHILIP KAPPEL". This is a fine etching of a pair of wind-sculpted pine trees on an exposed knoll, by a well regarded artist most associated with Connecticut, where he was born and where he died. Kappel's work includes a wide variety of subjects in painting and the graphic arts...

Oil on canvas, 20" by 24", 23 1/2" by 29" as framed, the subject a vase of orange flowers in a complex still life setting, an old timer wood dresser against the wall, other elements including books, smoker's pipe, ashtray, picture frame, tobacco can completing the scene. The painting is signed at lower left apparently "DAILEY" and is dated there "42". Also on the stretcher, faintly in white chalk, are the words " Still Dailey" (partly unreadable)...

Serigraph (silkscreen) print after a painting by the giant of modern art, GEORGES BRAQUE (1882-1963), 9 3/4" by 32" (an impressive 18 1/4" by 41" framed), signed in the print at lower left and dated there 1920. The title, "The Blue Plums", appears in the wide margin below the mat. Braque needs little introduction, as one of the famous names of modern art who in the early years of the century developed, along with his friend Picasso, the Cubism movement, which changed the art world forever...

Pastel on paper colorful abstract pastel drawing, 15 1/2" by 19 1/2" inside the mat, 25 1/2" by 29 1/2" as framed, signed illegibly at lower right. The work is very modern and there's a lot of energy in the dramatic forms. No doubt this was created in the 1980's to maybe just a few years ago. The artist's signature is difficult to make out...

Vintage oil of white, yellow and pink roses on a table top, circa Victorian late 19th century to the early years of the new century, apparently unsigned, in pleasing old wood and gilt frame, the entire work as framed measuring 11" by 13 1/4". The canvas is laid against the backing but is not glued down to it so there is some rippling. Other than a few minor surface abrasions the overall impression is quite beautiful. A fine acquisition for the still life collector or shabby chic decorator.

Oil on canvas painting of a forest, 18" by 18", in its original oak frame 22" by 22", signed at lower right in red "MOORE" and dated there 1927 or 1924. The painting is a beautiful example of American impressionism of the early 20th century, with some really lovely colors hiding under the grime of nearly 90 years. The artist was obviously a talent to be reckoned with, though with the common last name it is difficult to attribute this to any particular Moore...

**ONE OF TWO EXAMPLES IN MY SHOP; THE OTHER IN BETTER CONDITION AND FRAMED** Lithograph on paper laid on thin board, 31 1/2" by 20 5/8", printed for the summer 1977 Galerie Claude Bernard exhibition of recent paintings by the important Ecole de Paris (School of Paris) abstractionist and colorist MAURICE ESTEVE (1904-2001). The poster, produced by the famous French house of lithography Mourlot (seen at bottom) was likely produced in an edition of under 2000 examples...

This is a most unusual and appealing pop art painting (unframed, 27" by 35") by a mid-coast California artist, Tom Shultz (1943-2017). Works by the artist, who passed away in his mid seventies, have been exhibited at a number of galleries, particularly in the Paso Robles area of central California. The piece is entirely hand painted (not silkscreened, which I at first thought a possibility) on a spongy, soft pulpboard, which the artist has also painted on the reverse (an abstract)...

By well listed HENDRIK GERRIT TEN CATE (1803-1856) is this 9 1/2" by 13" watercolor on paper painting (15" by 19" as framed), laid long ago to a card, the subject a few chickens pecking the soil in front of a ramshackle thatch roofed structure I would think might be a barn or out building, except for the telltale domestic woodsmoke venting from the roof. The painting is actually signed "H.J. ten Kaet" at lower left...

This is an original hand-colored, 19th century lithograph print by the iconic American ornithologist and naturalist artist JOHN J. AUDUBON, from the nineteenth century series in the small octavo size. Inside the present mat, dimensions are 6" by 10" (13 1/4" by 17 1/4" as framed). The title is "Clapper Rail or Salt Water Marsh Hen" and this is Plate number 310 in a long series of bird prints in the small octavo size...

Watercolor and sepia brown ink on thin paper drawing of swans in a pond surrounded by vegetation, the sheet itself 5 3/8" by 11 5/8", apparently unsigned/undated, and with no watermarks I can see. If I had to guess as to age and origin I would say circa 1800 English, possibly later 18th century...

This is an eighteenth century English drawing, 10 1/2" by 15" including the mat details drawn by the artist, plus 1 1/2" wide old gold frame, the subject two men fishing on a pond, a house in the distance and trees framing this idyllic scene of Olde England, signed near the figures "I Burford" (or, Barford possibly) and dated there 1742 or possibly 1792. I do not see an artist listing that would correspond with this. The painting bears the marks of its great age----browning overall, some foxin...

Engraving on paper, the sheet 16" by 13 /4" (23 3/4" by 20" as framed), the subject man's cruelty to animals. This work, part of a series of images dealing with the subject, has become over time a landmark commentary on man's cruelty to his fellow creatures. This print is by one of the most famous satirists and social commentators of all time, WILLIAM HOGARTH of England (1697-1764). Hogarth was a painter as well, but it is for his satirical, widely distributed prints focusing on social misdeed...

Pastel drawing, unframed, 13 1/4" by 10" inside the mat, signed at lower right "Moran", the subject a small boat in a harbor, a headland in the distance crowned by a classic lighthouse. Primary colors are the colors of sunset...reds, oranges, yellow, brown..........the painting was purchased in the San Francisco Bay area but I have no idea as to the origin or identity of the artist. It is a work that shows the artist was skilled with pastel.
