Japanese glass ojime in a form of tombodama bead of flattened ball shape with inlays of a butterfly and cherry flowers. Tombodama can be translated as “dragonfly ball” and the name is thought to come about because when the molten glass is applied to the core bead it resembles a dragonfly’s eye. An expertly hand carved dark salmon coral pin dating to the early part of the 20th century, 1920 - 1930s. Using the natural formation of the branch coral, the artist created a tree trunk with a chrysanthemum and 2 buds. In Chinese culture the chrysanthemum symbolizes long life, is one of the 4 Chinese seasonal flowers, and is often associated with nobility. In excellent condition, this rare beauty measures about 1.5" high.
Katagami which is used for katazome (stenci-resist-dye), made of many layers of washi (Japanese handmade paper). It is painted with kakishibu (persimmon tannin) for waterproof and strength. The pattern "Kanze-mizu" is derived from the crest of the Noh drama player Kanze Dayu which is whirl of water. He was the founder of Kanze style Noh (15th century).

It is possible that it is Huang-Hualy, a specialist will be able to identify it. The construction is very neat, the joints are perfect, it is a beautiful work of cabinetmaking. I think it is a Chinese piece of furniture from the beginning of the 20th century.

The creator of this lovely Hagi chawan, Hirose Tanga (b. 1939) is the master-potter of Tenpozan kiln in the city of Hagi. When I acquired this piece I thought it reminded me of bowls produced by Yoshida Shuen (apprenticed under NLT Miwa Kyusetsu). As it turns out, Yoshida worked alongside Hirose in establishing Tenpozan and in training young potters in the art of “oni” Hagi which utilizes a rough textured clay and a milky translucent glaze (like the bowl shown here)...

Beautiful vintage Japanese sodenashi (work vest) made with indigo sakiori (rag weave) cotton, woven with multicolor areas to create a lovely patchwork effect, edged in solid indigo cotton, reinforced along the back, sides, and back of the neck in sashiko stitching. These vests were traditionally worn by workers in mountainous regions.
